Every year, on the 3rd of July, my mother used to drive me and my brother up and down Lincolnway. We would drive up and down and we would bask in the sense of community. People put their spots out, settle their little place to watch coming parade, and just… got along. For the most part. People would talk to each other, smile and wave. Act like neighbors.
Today we are a nation. Today we suspend our disbelief and just salute the ideals that our flag stands for. The rest of the year we are perfectly aware of how we come up short to those ideals, but today we just celebrate. LaPorte Indiana is the very epitome of this.
I want you to know that there is nowhere else like this. We are a proud example of what a liberated civilized society can be. You need to remember this, and keep it in mind for the rest of the year, because without this day stamped into our memory we may forget just how lucky we are that we are on this end of these terrifying weapons of war. No land craft on this Earth can go without rattling at the knees when one of these flies over. We experience the opposite, and we experience that because we are a united people under the very flag of the free world.
God bless America.
