A national prototype may be consistent. The path to getting it built rarely is.

Working across the country quickly teaches you that the same drawing does not produce the same building everywhere.
Snow loads in Colorado. Hurricane winds in Florida and Hawaii. Seismic requirements in California.
Local energy codes, accessibility interpretations, regional construction methods, entitlement requirements and jurisdiction priorities all change the path forward.
Even something as ordinary as mechanical ductwork or exterior materials can change because the project moved a few thousand miles.
At ADC, national work begins with listening.
We talk with local jurisdictions, contractors, operators and consultants. We learn how things are built there before assuming the way we did it somewhere else is the right answer.
Consistency matters. So does understanding place.

Designed here. Built everywhere.

ADC's work has taken us across the country, but national work was never the goal, simply for the sake of being national.
It grew out of relationships.
When a client trusts its architect with the next project - even when that project is several states away - there is real value in the knowledge that travels with the team.
Standards. Operations. Lessons learned. Preferences. Past decisions. What worked. What did not.
But familiarity with the client does not mean repeating the same building everywhere.
Every site still has its own climate, codes, construction practices, jurisdiction and community.
The client knowledge travels.
The architecture still has to belong where it lands.

Good client relationships have a way of crossing state lines.

Some of ADC's longest relationships began with a single project.
Then came another. And another.
Eventually, many of those clients began asking us to follow them into new cities, new states and completely different project conditions.
That continuity matters.
The longer we work with a client, the better we understand how they operate, what they value, what slows them down and where we can make the process easier.
It means less time explaining what worked last time and more time improving what comes next.
That may be one of the simplest measures of good client service:
If you consistently give your clients their time back, they will keep asking you to come back. Sometimes the next project just happens to be across the country.

Over the past few days, we've had the opportunity to celebrate two very different ADC projects - the Davis Collection and Subaru R&D.
One is a major retail redevelopment. The other transformed an existing building into a highly specialized automotive design environment.
That range is part of the ADC story.

Over the years, our projects, clients and reach have continued to grow, and we wanted our website to do a better job of showing not only what we design, but also how we think, how we collaborate and how we solve problems.
Today, we're excited to introduce the new Architecture Design Collaborative website.

Another exciting recognition for ADC.

We're proud to share that Subaru R&D has received the AIA Orange County Commendation Award - Commercial Interiors 2026.
From the beginning, this project was about creating more than a traditional workplace.
Working closely with Subaru through a highly collaborative design process, ADC transformed an existing building into an environment supporting design, modeling, review, presentation and everyday collaboration.
Open work areas, cafe-style meeting spaces, specialized modeling environments, a mezzanine and a new indoor-outdoor courtyard provide multiple ways for Subaru's design team to work and interact throughout the day.
The courtyard was one of the earliest ideas explored with the client and ultimately became one of the defining elements of the project - bringing daylight, outdoor space and an entirely different character to the existing building.
We're proud of what the team created together and honored to see it recognized by AIA Orange County.

Recognition for the Davis Collection.

We're proud to share that the Davis Collection has been named the 2026 Sacramento Business Journal's Best Real Estate Project of the Year - Retail.
Developed by Brixmor Property Group, the Davis Collection gave ADC the opportunity to approach retail development as more than just a collection of buildings. Architecture, site planning, pedestrian connections, landscape and long-term tenant flexibility all played a role in creating a destination designed to perform well beyond opening day.
Projects like this remind us that successful retail development is ultimately about creating places that work - for owners, tenants and the communities they serve.
We're grateful to Brixmor and the entire project team, and proud to see the Davis Collection recognized among the Sacramento region's outstanding real estate projects.

The Future of Retail Is More Than Retail

People do not visit shopping centers only to shop anymore.

They come to meet friends, share a meal, work remotely, attend events, spend time outdoors, and participate in community life.

Successful retail environments are evolving into community destinations, and that shift is changing how architects think about commercial design.

At The Davis Collection, the goal was not simply to modernize an aging shopping center. It was to create a place where commerce and community could thrive together.

As consumer habits continue to change, flexibility, walkability, public gathering spaces, and authentic placemaking will become just as important as the stores themselves.

The future of retail design is ultimately about creating memorable places—not simply places to buy things.

Sustainability Is More Than Solar Panels

Ask someone what makes a building sustainable, and they will probably mention solar panels, LED lighting, or electric vehicle charging.

Those strategies are important, but sustainability begins much earlier.

It starts with decisions about land use, orientation, durable materials, daylight, flexibility, transportation, water conservation, and designing buildings that can adapt rather than become obsolete.

At The Davis Collection, environmental performance was not added after the design was complete. It helped shape the design from the beginning.

The strongest sustainable projects do not rely on a single visible feature. They perform better because environmental responsibility has been integrated into the architecture, landscape, infrastructure, and long-term operation of the place.

Parking Lots Can Become Places

Many shopping centers were designed around cars.

Today’s successful retail environments are designed around people.

One of the biggest transformations at The Davis Collection was not simply the buildings—it was the space between them.

New gathering areas, shaded seating, enhanced landscaping, pedestrian connections, bicycle parking, and improved circulation encourage visitors to stay longer and experience the center differently.

These outdoor spaces help create something retail has always needed but often lacked: a sense of place.

Architecture is not only about designing buildings.

Sometimes it is about designing everything that happens between them.

The Most Sustainable Building Is Not Always New

When people think about sustainable architecture, they often think about solar panels or electric vehicle charging stations.

Those features matter.

But one of the most sustainable decisions an architect can make is to extend the life of an existing place.

Redeveloping aging commercial centers reduces the need for new infrastructure, preserves valuable land resources, strengthens surrounding neighborhoods, and creates new opportunities for local businesses.

At The Davis Collection, sustainability was not treated as a checklist of features. It became the framework for reimagining an established retail destination as a more connected, walkable, and resilient community asset.

Sometimes the greenest building is not the newest building.

Sometimes it is the one given a meaningful second life.
