THE PLANT MINUTE

Pilea peperomioides

1. Meet the Plant
Native to the Yunnan Province of China, this quirky houseplant is loved for its perfectly round, coin-shaped leaves. It typically grows 12–18 inches tall and wide indoors.

2. Light Needs ☀️
Bright, indirect light or a gentle early morning sun or late day sun is ideal, but avoid harsh afternoon/ mid day rays. Rotate the pot regularly for even growth.

3. Watering 💧
Water when most of the soil feels dry. Don't let it sit in water, and reduce watering during winter.

4. Soil 🌱
Use a well-draining potting mix. Adding perlite or pumice helps keep the roots healthy and prevents soggy soil.

5. Propagation 🌿
Pilea produces baby plants ("pups") from the base of the mother plant. Once they're a few inches tall with their own roots, gently separate and pot them up. May also propagate by stem or leaf cutting ( least succesful)

6. Common Pests 🐛
Watch for spider mites, mealybugs, and fungus gnats. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil, improve air circulation, and avoid overwatering.

7. Fun Plant Fact 🌍
Known as the "Friendship Plant," Pilea is traditionally shared by passing along its pups to family and friends. It's also believed by some to symbolize prosperity and good fortune.
