We are pleased to share an update from T and Nana Creations. Building on yesterday’s post regarding our UV laser and the colorful ‘King Cake’ knives, Donna and I, Ted, are currently working with our Fiber MOPA 60W laser on the xTool F2 Ultra. This system enables significantly more vivid and diverse colors on stainless steel and titanium compared to standard fiber lasers.
The MOPA (Master Oscillator Power Amplifier) configuration provides enhanced control over laser pulses, allowing us to generate rich, bright hues—such as deep blues, vibrant greens, striking reds, and warm golds—through precise formation of oxide layers on the metal surface.
While the results are impressive, achieving consistent outcomes presents challenges. The final color is influenced by numerous factors, including laser settings (power, speed, pulse adjustments, line density, and frequency), the specific grade and surface finish of the metal, and ambient conditions such as temperature and humidity. Minor variations in these elements can lead to noticeable differences between runs, necessitating careful testing and calibration for each project.
Here are examples from our recent parameter tests on stainless steel. These grids demonstrate the broad spectrum of colors achievable by varying power, speed , lines per cm frequency, and focus adjustments, all executed in a single pass:
These tests underscore both the creative possibilities of the MOPA laser and the importance of continued experimentation to establish reliable settings. Donna and I are actively refining these parameters through extensive trials, with the aim of producing high-quality, repeatable vibrant pieces for our custom work.
We sincerely appreciate your continued interest and support. If you have any ideas for designs, specific color combinations you would like to see explored, or suggestions for materials or techniques we should try, please let us know—we would be delighted to consider them and incorporate promising approaches into our testing.
Thank you for following our progress at T and Nana Creations. We look forward to sharing more results as we advance.
