Knitting needles come in five types, each with its own job.

Single pointed needles. A single pair, stopper on one end. Flat back-and-forth work, scarves, simple shawls, swatches.

Circular needles. Two tips joined by a flexible cable. Knit in the round with no seam, sweaters, hats, socks on magic loop. Still works flat too, just turn at row end.

Double-pointed needles (DPNs). A set of 4-5 short needles. Socks, mittens, small-circumference hats, anywhere circulars are too big for a narrow tube.

Cable needles. Short, often notched or U-shaped. Holds stitches out of the way for a cable crossing, not for knitting rows. Essential for aran patterns and braided cuffs.

Interchangeable sets. Tips plus cables in different lengths, swap pieces per project. Saves space and money over stocking dozens of fixed pairs.

Material matters. Metal is slick, fast for stockinette, best in an experienced hand. Wood and bamboo grip tighter, good for beginners and slippery fibers like silk or alpaca. Plastic stays light for very large sizes.

Sizing. Check the yarn label for the recommended range. Thinner needles, denser fabric. Thicker needles, looser stitches.
