4 years ago I finished my first crochet piece (kinda).
Is it incredibly stiff and made out of synthetic fibers, making it an uncomfy and sweaty experience to wear? Of COURSEEEE it is!
💗
In high school, I learned how to crochet for my textile and design class, and got hooked (no pun intended). I made a plethora of scarves and hats with very pointy tops, because I wasn’t very good at decreasing and increasing. Friends and family were gifted pointy hats with instructions to tuck the point into itself and it’ll almost look like a regular hat and not like a ni**le on their head.
Then came a knitting phase with even more scarves, a few socks that never got a second pair, and silly things of that sort.
Then a loooooong hiatus to focus on a million other hobbies. Drawing, painting, digital art, filmmaking, ceramics, photography, stop motion animation, polymer clay figures, jewelry, graphic design, a little bit of this a little bit of that.
Summer of 2022, my roommate and I both bought crochet bucket hats at a market. It was pink with strawberries sewn about it. I want to make a strawbie hat… I want to play with string. The itch to crochet came back. Unfortunately for that desire, I was living on the other side of the country at the time, so all of my hooks and yarn were over 2,500 miles away.
Once I moved back, I think there were seconds until I began getting into crochet again, making it fill a Los Angeles sized hole in my Lancaster heart.
I made a handful of projects before this sweater, but this was the first piece I put together that required proper measurements, sewing, and assembly beyond just crocheting.
She’s made a few debuts out in public, so she’s had her time to shine as a sweater. But as I briefly mentioned, it’s made of bulky polyester yarn, and I took a guess at which hook size to use. I’m so proud of how it turned out, but it is indeed an incredibly heavy, stiff, and itchy piece of clothing. A neurodivergent person’s dream…
However, over the past 4 years, I’ve learned from my fiber arts sins, and I’ve pivoted to all sorts of crochet projects from plushies to tapestries to decorative or functional items.
