Protect your trees! Rutting season has begun. At this time of year (in the northern hemisphere), male deer are looking to declare their mating territory. They rub the scent glands at the base of their antlers on posts, trees, shrubs, you name it, and in the process of doing so they can greatly compromise the health of a tree or a shrub. I spied this tree while walking the dogs this afternoon. It was undamaged a few days ago. Protect your trees before the bucks get them!

Calling all livers of gardens and natural beauty! We need your help! I volunteer on the board of the Whitby Island Garden tour because I believe in using the power of gardens to make good things happen. Please join us on July 18 to help make more beauty in the world!

Help make our 30th Anniversary Whidbey Island Garden Tour on July 18, 2026 a success! Volunteer in amazingly beautiful gardens. In exchange for your time you’re invited to a volunteer only gardens preview (July 17) and a catered dinner the evening of the main tour. Tour proceeds support many island organizations. Help make a difference in our island home. See our website (in bio) for signing up. Lovely morning on my “Solar Terrace” (thanks Great Dixter!). The garden is buzzing with life.

The sweetest little moment, brought to you by nature. I love living where the ferns grow over my head!
