Why this backsplash tile failed within a few weeks -

There is insufficient thinset coverage on the back of the tile. Proper installation requires full mortar transfer to achieve bond strength and long term durability.

Simply notching thinset on the wall and placing tile is not adequate. The tile must be properly embedded by applying pressure and moving it perpendicular to the trowel ridges to collapse them and eliminate air pockets.

In this installation, the tiles were not back buttered and an undersized trowel was used. This resulted in minimal contact between the tile and substrate.
Industry standards (TCNA) require:
Minimum 95% mortar coverage in wet or high exposure areas
Minimum 80–85% in dry areas
The observed coverage is significantly below these thresholds.

Tiles were able to be removed by hand with minimal force, indicating bond failure. A properly installed tile will exhibit full mortar transfer and will not release intact.

Conclusion: This installation does not meet industry standards for tile adhesion and requires removal and proper reinstallation.

I want to give a shout out to Jaden Edwards of Right Hand Man Home Improvements for coming in and patching a 12x12 drywall cutout and getting the entire ceiling painted the same day.

When working for high end clients, demands have no choice but to be met. It takes a certain character and drive to make that happen.

Tile surgery.

This is a 60"x120" shower floor.
I have extracted the 1st row of 12x12 Carrara marble on the wall as well as the entire shower floor system. I will be moving drains and mechanicals in order to fit and install a true recessed shower tray to provide a curbless entry with a single water pitch to the linear drain system.

I build showers and tile systems to last decades, not just to pass a final walk through.

Proper prep, full waterproofing, movement accommodation, and installation to industry standards take time, skill, and the right materials.

A $3,500 labor price on a shower means corners are being cut somewhere, a lot of them. That is not how I operate.

My typical shower installations fall in the $7,500 to $9,500 labor range because they are built as complete systems, not surface level finishes. The goal is long term performance, warranty compliance, and zero failures, not speed and shortcuts.

Quality craftsmanship, accountability, and work that holds up over time will always define my business.

Quality isn't expensive. Failure is.

For reference - the total cost of this project was just under $13,000.00, labor and materials.

The veins on the tile didn't fall into place on accident!

Gypsum drywall buried inside the shower pan, acting as the shower pan.
Denshield, gypsum, is a material that absorbs water, swells, rots, and destroys the system from the inside out.

TCNA - (Tile Council Of North America) does not allow water sensitive materials in a shower receptor.

Yet, we see it repeatedly in high end lake homes, vacation properties.

Humidity, temperature swings, expansion, constant use, and v***r pressure expose every shortcut.
