We had the absolute honor of visiting the in Montgomery, Alabama today.

“The purpose of this museum is to advance a society where children of these children can one day live unburdened by the legacy of slavery, free from bigotry and racial inequality.”

First two photos are from and because photos are not permitted inside the exhibit.

I read about this museum years ago and told myself if I ever have the opportunity to travel through Alabama - I will go. I can’t tell you how important the messages, art, exhibits, and conversations are to see for yourself.

The exhibit that caught my attention and drew me to the museum is the display of soils from lynching sites across the Unites States. I was struck by the emotional and physical connection to land. For the short time I spent observing and taking in this exhibit - I was touched by the conversations I heard from people remarking on the colors, textures, and relationships with soil. Folks commented - “oh I know that color.” And “is that from the actual spot?” Questioning and connecting in ways words cannot.

Please learn more by searching “The Legacy Museum” and/or view the link in my stories. 🧡

No trip to southeastern Wyoming is complete without a visit to a soil affectionately called, the wedge.

Do you have a favorite spot to visit when you return somewhere.

Most of mine are soils, a few are trees, others are views, and some are people 🤎

Just a couple of gals in the wilds of Wyoming collecting our favorite gray/white soils.

I mentioned in my stories that we’re road tripping - with a major stop today to collect this soil. You may know that less than 4 days ago, we were on our floating home ⛵️ in Grenada - hence the ill prepared clothing for this brisk, surprisingly wet adventure 😂 I have no pants, socks, or boots 🤦‍♀️

This is what goes into making soil-based watercolors - collecting the actual soil - my favorite part, even without the comfort of muck boots bc sometimes you just have to get your feet wet.

We’ll take this soil back with us to separate the clay (the pigment-sized particles used to make paint). From there we mull it into wet watercolor paint, dry it for transport, and watch to see the magic that y’all create with it.

Follow along for the next week to see us collect some other soil colors 🌈
