Monet & Renoir at La Grenouillère, 1869
In the summer of 1869, two young painters who could barely afford their paints set up their easels side by side at La Grenouillère, a bathing and boating spot on the Seine, and painted the same view on the same day.
Renoir was drawn to the people, the bathers on the little round island and the couples talking along the edge of the water, painted in soft, feathery strokes. Monet looked past them to the river itself, breaking the surface into quick strokes of blue, green and white to catch the way the light moved across it. Standing in the same place, one painted life on the riverbank and the other painted light on the water, and between them they laid the first stones of Impressionism.
