According to surviving accounts, Chief Káruun disappeared alone into the mountains during a winter famine and returned nine days later carrying the carcass of an enormous, unidentified animal crowned with curved horns. He ordered the meat burned but kept the horns, wearing them thereafter as a ceremonial crown. Over the years, witnesses claimed the horns multiplied and allowed Káruun to predict storms, migrations, approaching enemies, and deaths.
When Káruun died, his people reportedly discovered that the crown could no longer be removed: the horns had rooted themselves into his skull. His remains were interred in a sealed stone chamber with instructions that the grave never be opened. When the skull was recovered generations later, examination found no evidence that the horns had been mechanically attached. Several appear to emerge directly from healed bone.
