In 1942, young men came from every corner of the country to train as glider pilots at Laurinburg-Maxton. No engine. No second chance. For a little while, Scotland County was the center of the sky.
This weekend, the Sky High Expo brings the planes back. Airshow and fireworks are Saturday, October 17 at Laurinburg-Maxton Airport.
Before or after you watch the sky, come downtown and see what that generation left on the ground: leaded glass airplanes, a hand-inked Corsair, wartime Pyrex, and a four-foot soldier still standing at attention.
