Hand carved vessel made out of black walnut. Loosely titled “7” this piece features a vessel supported by five tendrils emerging from the base. The inspiration for this piece came from birds nest I saw one day while walking the dog. I was fascinated by how it was so perfectly nestled between this group of vines. I wanted the piece to feel very organic so I left the carved texture on the tendrils and added a swirling gouge texture on the base. The title refers to the seven stitches or lessons I learned while carving the piece. Most importantly, always wear safety gear.

One of the current pieces I’m currently working on. 12 foot long 3 feet wide and almost 3 feet tall sculpture out of a single piece of Red Elm. The vision was to have three oval shaped structures interacting with each other. Initially to lighten the piece to take it to the shop, I carved it on site at the corner of 21st and Naismith. The interaction with people passing by was wonderful! I’m hoping to have it done it early September to display at this years art show. #

A vessel I completed this summer in walnut. I’ve always been fascinated by primitively made tribal carvings. There were several at the Nelson Atkins museum of art when I was a kid and they absolutely entranced me. When I started this one I wanted to give it a more primitive feel, evoking the carvings I enjoyed so much. I wasn’t super clear on how I would do that other than I knew that the carvings had to be deeper. Just a scratch on the surface wouldn’t do. After sitting with it awhile, it came to me that this should be a circular pattern. So starting at the rim, I carved a thin ribbon that wraps around the vessel ending at the bottom. A pattern also found in labyrinths around the world. To give an even more primitive feel, much of the work was completed by hand

As I’m preparing for the one and only show I’ll be doing this year (Art in The Park in Lawrence), I found myself getting frustrated that I don’t have as much prepared as I would like. Luckily I’m working on this here meditation labyrinth of a bowl and had some time to reflect. I stopped doing as many shows so I could focus more on art instead of my capitalistic tendency to produce more and make more money. Doing 9 shows a year I focused less on art and more on what sold and I could make fast. The result was a lot of cutting boards, things with epoxy and bowls that did not push any boundaries. I have to remember all that when I am frustrated that it took months to prepare 20 pieces. Moving forward I’ll be making a lot fewer cutting boards and utensils and more art. I will make what excites me and challenges me. By the time I finished sanding the dang bowl and reached the middle I had found a decent amount of peace and way less frustration. I’ll be at Art in the park September 13-14 with lots of amazing pieces. Stop by n check it out.

The shops a hot mess but I got around to hanging this’n for the first time today so that’s a plus. Still have to pick out the right pendants to go in it and add the texture, but for the most part it’s almost done! Currently it’s sitting at 43”long 23”wide 15” deep and 22ish pounds .

Warning this is not a woodworking related post. Other than woodworking one of the things I’m best at is baking pies. My mom got into pie making in the late 70s in the northern Colorado area. She passed on the knowledge and recipes onto my daughter and i. She is pictured on the right in the first picture with monstrous 36” diameter pie she made for the governor of Colorado one thanksgiving. Tomorrow my daughter and I will be offering a sampling of these fabulous pies at the Lawrence farmers market. We will be there from 730-1130 and will only be bringing 50 mini pies so stop by before they are gone! . .

The most recent vessel I’ve finished. It’s been carved from a single piece of black walnut. The recipient is a member of the KC Symphony so I split the vessel in a way that evokes the feel of their logo. To further that feeling I added epoxy in the color scheme of the logo and a continuous single leg. .

Wouldn’t you know it I was putting the chair back together, and the piece I made broke. I guess it was an opportunity to learn. So I started over again. This time with a better piece of wood. That one didn’t break. I think it turned out fairly well. It’s fun, but amongst the other chairs it’s a subtle fun.

I’m a fixin a chair. I figure since I can why not break the mold and make something different and fun. Yeah…., fun. Really it’s an experiment in functional art or something like that.

I’ve been getting requests for custom gaming accessories. One such request was for a deck box for a collective card game. This is the prototype which I kept cause it’s ridiculously cool. The main body of the box is padauk the legs and closure k***s for the hidden dice compartment are walnut. A few process shots are included. Check out that tiny scraper! Isn’t it the coolest! This weekend I brought with me to the Tulsa Mayfest to show off a bit.
