Sometimes home is the backyard at two in the morning.

When I was a kid, my stepdad would wake us in the middle of the night whenever something worth seeing was happening in the sky. A meteor shower. An eclipse. He’d point up and explain it all like a man who had studied the stars his whole life. He hadn’t. He was a mechanic who paid attention.

This week I wrote about those nights, a promise I made to my daughter and didn’t keep, and the secret plan her Pop Pop has to keep it in my place.
