A young California condor flew into Oregon last month, marking the first time in more than 120 years that one of the critically endangered birds has flown free in Oregon’s sky, according to the Yurok Tribe–led Northern California Condor Restoration Program.

‘What's the story behind?

The story behind the indigenous lady walking down Hwy 101 near the Newport airport with a marked pace car behind her is related to the "Run to the Rogue" event, an annual relay run organized by the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. This event involves tribal members taking turns carrying an eagle flag staff from Siletz to their ancestral homelands, specifically to the Rogue River area.

The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians is a federally recognized confederation of over 27 Native American tribes and bands who originally inhabited a vast area of over 20 million acres from northern California to southwest Washington. The tribe has a complex history, including being forced onto the Coast Indian Reservation, having their lands reduced, and being terminated by the US government in 1954. However, they regained federal recognition in 1977 and have since worked to preserve their culture and traditions ¹.

The Run to the Rogue event is part of the tribe's efforts to reconnect with their heritage and ancestral lands. It's Oregon's longest relay on foot, covering a significant distance to reach the Rogue River area. This event showcases the tribe's resilience and commitment to preserving their cultural identity ¹.’
