Every now and again I post my “Edinburgh at Twlight” painting as it’s my absolute favorite painting that I’ve ever done and I painted it early in my art journey using my twenty+ year old Grumbacher Academy paints that hadn’t been opened but maybe once or twice in that span of time (shame on me).

Every Sunday, I try to post an older piece of art for the challenge hosted by my Singapore friends and where we share our bygone art in hopes to see the ground we’ve gained along the way!

Note- this was before I learned how to use the wet on wet technique and I didn’t know that you save the white of the paper. Wasn’t that why Chinese White was included in the set of paint anyway? Why didn’t my art teacher in HS teach me any of this?

I laid down the basics for this last night. One of the most colorful birds is the painted bunting. They are not common, but I will occasionally see them on the walking trail through the woods by the Delaware river. Usually it is just a flash of color that one sees. As I was sketching this out I used color pencil to block out the major colors. I decided to use a wash of Grumbacher Academy Paynes Gray with salt for the background. I really appreciate how the Grumbacher granulates with the salt. I will finish the drawing using Prismacolor colored pencils.
