Another Mabel’s TAKEOVER 😮😮🥰

For those of you who are new here, you might not know that in late 2020 while hustling to keep Mabel’s afloat during the pandemic, I had the idea to open a children’s bookstore across the street.

It was a brilliant idea. And it was an absurd idea. I love books, I love Lemont, I love the idea that kids could have a space specifically for them here in downtown. So I did it.

Long story short, after a couple years I begrudgingly realized I could not continue to run both businesses simultaneously. Nothing was working as well as it could be because I was stretched too thin. It was a little SAD and a lot humbling.

But still believing the concept should exist, I quietly put it up for sale. A lot of people want* to run a small business. Few have the audacity to do it.

In comes Carla. A customer, philanthropist, artist, mom, spitfire. As she’s walking out of Mabel’s one day, she turns around and says…maybe I’ll buy it.

The rest is history. Carla SAVED Three Stories Books(tore) and grew it into her own vision by adding so much more. ❤️ She became a friend and an irreplaceable part of our Lemont family and there is no one you want on your side more than Carla.

But tomorrow she wont be at Three Stories, she’ll be HERE at Mabel’s as a guest shopkeeper!! So it’s the BEST day to visit BOTH Canal Street businesses!!

Hours are 11-5 Friday. Come over! Keep her busy because honestly, she’s going to have a coronary if she goes in my back room. 😅🫣

Yoo Hoo….Guess what I did today? 👋👋

Popped in for a post-op Drs appt and then my driver for the next several weeks (aka husband) took me to work! 🎉🎉🎉 I couldn’t move anything or bend down to pick anything up but I was able to get a bit done from my “directors chair.” 👉 And since the Car Show was cancelled had plenty of extra time to fiddle around.

Would mean the world if you stopped in the next week or so while our hours are being covered by an entire fun collection of Mabel’s! Tomorrow are 2 of our favorite Kulagas 👱‍♀️👱‍♀️and wait til you hear who is in here on Friday. 🤔

A MABELS MARKET TAKEOVER??

Sunday June 14th. You won’t want to miss it.

I’ll tell you a story a decade+ old.

Amanda from Aster Gardens used to have a website about landscaping. (Ok, it was a BLOG) I’m telling you this from memory, so it might not be totally correct. But I think she had a partner (or maybe not) who did jobs on the northside and Amanda took the jobs on the southside. On her site, she had a clever advertisement offering bartering. (I know surprise surprise) where you could offer up something in exchange for her landscaping expertise. And boy did I need it.

So I offered my husbands guitar lessons. And that was a good fit for her husband and so I met Amanda, got the most straight up, honest, funny, good advice that we know her for and Jason and Dan began their own music inspired bromance.

I tried impressing Amanda with all of the vintage things in my garage, except she also had everything I had plus more. I tried impressing her with our plans in downtown Lemont, except she was already familiar and had her own plans brewing in the back of her mind. And what I learned about Amanda is it’s little about what you have that impresses her and more about who you are.

And so Mabels opened. And Amanda would help out with things and hold terrarium classes and just be generally cool wherever she was. And we became friends being somehow incredibly similar and incredibly different.

And then she opened Aster Gardens around the block and as you’ve heard me say before, there is something so deeply familiar and personal and vulnerable going through the same thing at the same time. Just ask your mom friends or your work wife or your college besties. Business owners have that in downtown Lemont. But this one was already built on a pretty fun foundation.

So as an enormous favor to me and just to demonstrate how connected the shops in downtown Lemont truly are…

Our guest shopkeeper tomorrow is the infallible, brilliant, infinitely cool Amanda Thomsen from Aster Gardens.

Support her. Support me. Go to both shops!

Please come over. ☺️🙏🏡

Ok you guys, recovery isn’t going *great* but Im hanging in there. Strangely, moving around and pain levels are rhe easiest. I’m a stair master and you should see me on the walker. 🙌 Its every other side side affect: medication reaction ect that’s bringing me down. But I think the worst is behind me. ☀️☀️☀️

Come visit Mary today! She’ll be there 11-4. I’m going to try and get in there later this week- I hope everything is gone! ☺️

Small update. Hip Replacement Surgery went great. Recovery is going 😐 MEH 😑 Still in hospital but things are looking up since I can finally open my eyes longer than 5 mins AND use the restroom. 🙌

In the meantime, don’t forget we’re closed on Wednesdays due to the car show. 😟

But when you come back on Thursday, buy one of these. The Oregon Trail cup makes me laugh so much. “Get in Loser” 😂😂

The show must go on. Please come see Kiley today while I get a new hip. Open 12-5pm 🦿🙌💪❤️

{Edit: to be clear, Mabel’s Market is NOT closing}

This news 😢

I’m pushing this one down…way down in an effort to pretend like it’s not happening.

Having a small business on a small street in a small town really does create a small family. How many times did you find Mabel’s empty, only for me to wave you down because I’m chatting in front of 1 Happy Girl. From borrowing tissue paper or toilet paper to talking through events and sales trends, the feeling of being a community that could rely on each other is so special.

Plus Paige and Dawn are just really good friends. ❤️

My heart is broken for the loss of 1HG on Canal Street.

I hope you see them off in the best way possible. I hope you visit them in New Lenox. I hope you stay vigilant about supporting the small businesses you love.

Want to talk about it? 😭

Eighteen years.
It’s just a number until you realize it’s half your life.
When I opened our Lemont store at 18 years old, I couldn’t have imagined the journey ahead. Back then, all I knew was that I was willing to work hard and chase a dream.
Now, at 36, I look back and realize I’ve spent half of my life within these walls.
For more than a decade, I was here seven days a week, pouring my heart into this store, building relationships, celebrating milestones, and creating something that became so much more than just a business. This store became a second home, and the people who walked through these doors became so much more than customers. They became friends. They became family.
Over the years, our little store grew into multiple locations, and our family grew too—with babies, new adventures, and new dreams. Through every season of life, this store and this community have been there with us. So many of you have watched us grow up, and we’ve had the privilege of watching your families grow right alongside ours.
Today, with a mix of gratitude, sadness, and excitement, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our Lemont location and move everything to our New Lenox store.
Making this decision has not been easy. The reality is that the cost of operating in this space has changed dramatically over the last few years, and as we look toward the future, we have to make decisions that allow us to continue growing in a sustainable way. Ongoing challenges, including extended street closures that impact accessibility and traffic throughout much of the summer, have also played a role in this difficult decision.
As hard as it is to say goodbye, we know it’s the right decision for the future. What gives me peace is knowing that we’re not losing what matters most. The relationships, the memories, and the community we’ve built together don’t stay inside a building. They come with us. Because the truth is, the heart of this business was never these four walls. It was all of you. The conversations. The laughter. The support. The friendships. The memories. - CONTINUED IN COMMENTS
