Most homeowners never think about this — but the weather on the day your roof goes on matters. A lot.

Here's the deal:

❄️ **Too cold** (near freezing): asphalt shingles get brittle. They can crack when they're handled or nailed, and the sealant strips don't bond right — so they don't seal down like they should. Install in the wrong cold and you're setting up problems before the first storm.

🔥 **Too hot** (over 100° — the big one here in Texas): shingles get soft. And some manufacturers' shingles scuff and mark up easy. When a crew walks across a roof that hot, those soft shingles can take footprints and scuffs just from the foot traffic. That's damage to a brand-new roof.

So what do we do? We watch the forecast and work around it — early starts in the summer to beat the heat. We don't force a job on a day the conditions are going to hurt the quality. A roof's supposed to last 20, 30 years. I'm not going to rush it onto your house on the one day the weather's against us.

That's the difference between a crew that just wants to knock it out — and one thinking about your roof 10 years down the road.

They fired a 4-inch block of ice at this roof. Watch the close-up at the end.

This is Euroshield's own hail cannon test. A 4-inch ice cylinder, clocked at 183 mph on the chronograph, goes into their Vermont Slate rubber shingle. Slow it down and look at the roof afterwards. There's not a mark on it.

A few straight facts:

• Euroshield carries a Class 4 impact rating (UL 2218). That's the top of the scale.
• It's made from recycled tire rubber, so it flexes instead of cracking.
• Some Texas insurers give a discount on a Class 4 roof. One of our Lewisville customers saw his premium drop about $60 a month. Ask your agent what yours offers. Every policy is different.

It costs more up front than asphalt. For some homes it's worth it, and for some it isn't. I'll tell you which one yours is.

Biltmore Roofing is a Euroshield preferred contractor, veteran-owned, working Lewisville and Flower Mound. Free roof inspection, no pressure: 817-714-3366.

You can't see the fiberglass mat from the roof. So why is it in your denial letter?

Some carriers look at a hail bruise and ask one question: "But was the fiberglass mat fractured?"

You cannot see the mat from on top of a roof. You'd have to pull the shingle off and flip it over. Nobody does that on an inspection — not their adjuster, not me.

I keep it simple. Hail bruises, counted in a 10x10 test square. That's what I document. I'm not adding an extra element to the definition — that's their move, not mine.

Contractor, not a public adjuster. Every policy is different — read yours. Free look at your roof, no pressure. 817-714-3366

Biltmore Roofing is a Gold sponsor of the Flower Mound band and guard this year, and tomorrow's the day they go out and earn it.

The FloMo March-A-Thon is Saturday. Fifteen stops across Flower Mound, Highland Village, Bartonville and Double Oak, from noon to about two. The kids march out in full uniform, in September Texas heat, and play for whoever stops to listen.

Full schedule is on the flyer — there's a stop near just about everybody.

I'll be out there myself. My son's in the band, which is how we got involved in the first place. Sponsoring it was an easy call after that.

If you're running errands Saturday afternoon and you hear a drumline in a parking lot, pull over for a minute. Roll the window down. Those kids have been rehearsing since July. And if you've got a few dollars on you, it goes straight to instruments, uniforms, buses and contest fees — the stuff that keeps a program like this alive.

Go support them. 🐆

Soy contratista, no ajustador público. Lee tu propia póliza.

"The sentence that killed your claim"

If you told the adjuster "it's been leaking a while" — or "I'm not sure when it started" — that's not storm damage anymore.

That's wear and tear. And wear and tear isn't covered.

Same roof. Different words. Different outcome.

This 10x10 square decided your roof claim.

Your adjuster doesn't inspect your whole roof.

He chalks off a 10x10 section on ONE slope and counts the hail hits inside it.

Hail is directional — it comes in at an angle. Your north slope can be hammered and your south slope untouched. Square up on the wrong slope, and your roof gets written up as "no damage" while the hits are still up there.

Same storm as your neighbor. Different answer.

"Your neighbor got a roof. You got a letter."

Two houses. Forty feet apart. Same storm, same hail.

One gets a full roof replacement. One gets a denial letter.

It's almost never luck — there are five reasons this happens, and one of them is yours. Full breakdown on the channel.

"Out of one to five stars, they get a 10."

That's the Baganz family talking, and I'll take it.

Here's what went into it. They wanted one specific shingle — and it had been discontinued. Instead of talking them into something else, we went and found it and got them on the first list the day it came back to Dallas.

Then the weather turned. Rain was coming, and it was supposed to be a three-day job. The crew of 8-10 got it done in two.
I have to give it up for Pedro on that crew. 75 years old and he kept up with every man out there.

And because they chose a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle, they didn't just get a tougher roof — their carrier gave them a break on the premium for it.

That's the Biltmore way. Veteran-owned, right here in DFW.

Neighbors — I want to share something from this week, because I watched it cost somebody real money and I'd rather you not be next.
I got called out to look at a roof. The damage was there, plain as day. Hail, no question about it. But the storm that did it came through years ago — best I can tell, back in 2021.
Here's the part most folks don't know. Three things had already gone wrong before I ever got on the ladder:
1. Time had run out.
Just about every policy says you have to report a loss promptly — and Texas puts limits on how long you have. Five years later, a carrier doesn't even have to argue about whether the damage is real. They can deny it on timing alone. Real damage, real hail, no coverage.
2. She'd switched insurance companies since the storm.
This is the one that surprises people, so hear me on it: the company that insured you on the day the storm hit is the company responsible for it. Not whoever you're with now. If you switched carriers somewhere along the way, filing today with your current company for a storm that hit before they covered you — that claim was never going anywhere. Doesn't matter how good your new policy is.
3. She's selling the house.
This is where it turns from a roof problem into a money problem. The buyer's inspector is going to climb up there and find exactly what I found. Now it's on the report. Now it's in the negotiation — and it's the buyer's number, not hers, on the buyer's timeline. Nothing hands a buyer leverage like a roof issue discovered late.
So here's the whole point:
After a hail or heavy wind event, get your roof looked at within a few weeks. Not because something's definitely wrong — most of the time it isn't. But because:
• You're inside your reporting window
• You're still with the carrier who actually owes you
• And if you ever sell, you're the one who found it first
Write down the dates. When a big storm rolls through Lewisville, put it in your phone. That one note is worth more than people realize when you're trying to remember which storm did what.
I'm Alfredo, I run Biltmore Roofing here in town — veteran-owned, and I've spent years on the roof and in the adjuster meeting both. A look costs nothing and takes about twenty minutes. If it's fine, I'll tell you it's fine — that's a good answer too.
Just don't let it sit five years. That's the one I can't fix.
(I'm a roofing contractor, not a public adjuster — always read your own policy and make your own call.)
