During Women's History Month, we want to celebrate the incredible work of Debra Hensley! As a lifelong community leader, Hensley has been an important player in fighting for the rights of LGBTQ Kentuckians. 🏳️‍🌈

Among her many accomplishments, Hensley served as a council member for Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government from 1986 to 1992. She advocated for passage of Lexington’s Fairness Ordinance and later served on the Fairness Ordinance Committee. She is pictured here alongside Ernesto Scorsone in 2019, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Fairness Ordinance.

When recounting the experience of passing the ordinance, Hensley emphasized that "I look in the last 20 years, individuals who have embraced me as a le***an and as a leader in this community. It’s a lot different than 20 plus years ago. Why? Because they don’t really see things through the lens. They see me as a human being who wants the best for my family and the best for the community. That’s what we have to do."

In addition to her work for the Fairness Campaign, Hensley also played a major role in the creation of the Downtown Lexington Corporation, JustFundKY, the Plantory, Lexington Community Radio, and Debra’s Social Stimulus. Outside of her community leadership, she also performed in "The Va**na Monologues" at the Singletary Center at UK. We are so grateful for Debra Hensley! 💖
