❤️ The Legacy of Harold "Doug" Shealey

Doug's life reflected resilience, service, and creativity.

Born in Olympia, he spent part of his childhood in North Carolina before returning home to graduate from Olympia High School. During his school years, he studied under respected art teacher Gilmer "Gil" Petroff, who helped nurture his artistic abilities. Jerry Kirkland also shared that although Doug painted during high school, though it wasn't until after the loss of his brother, Steve, that he truly turned to painting as a creative outlet.

After graduating highschool Doug served honorably in the U.S. Navy before returning home to Bull Street, where he continued creating the artwork that so many have come to admire.

Doug Shealey's paintings are admired not only for their subject matter, but for their incredible attention to detail.

Professionally trained as an architectural draftsman and renderer, Doug approached every painting with remarkable precision. Before applying paint, he carefully mapped each structure with architectural accuracy. He then hand-painted thousands of individual cars, buses, fans, and countless other details that brought each scene to life.

His oil paintings became so finely detailed that many people mistook them for photographs until they stepped closer.

Doug wasn't simply painting stadiums—he was preserving the atmosphere, excitement, and memories that made each place special.

🏟️ Where Inspiration Began

Every artist has a story, and Doug Shealey's began with a simple conversation between friends.

While playing golf at The Country Club of Lexington, Doug and his lifelong friend, Jerry Kirkland, stood on the 7th hole overlooking the course. Jerry suggested Doug begin painting golf courses- noting that prints could be sold to every member of the club. That conversation sparked an idea that soon grew into Doug's iconic paintings of college football stadiums, racetracks, and Southern landmarks.

Recognizing the passion that surrounded Southern sports, Doug realized he could capture not only the architecture of these venues but also the excitement and tradition they represented.

What started with one suggestion became a body of work that continues to be treasured throughout the Southeast.
