We absolutely love mid century modern homes - the mid century design ethos of material honesty, structural expression, deference to landscape, and humility - this all resonates so much. This vintage of home can often present in pretty rough shape, coming on 75 years old. But the details are so smart, the construction so solid, that so much is worth understanding and rehabilitating. We have the good pleasure to be working in to a handful of mid century modern homes at the moment. Please enjoy nerding out with some of the details we’ve forensically re-created, some original documentation, a photo of a home we think is beautiful, and a humble landscape detail that charms us.

Thank you for the COVER (!!!) feature this past weekend. We thoroughly enjoy the magic of transformation - check out this surgical addition that transformed an ordinary ranch house (and we say “ordinary ranch” with love) into a magical treetop perch with lots of nooks and crannies for every aspect of the family’s life. One major challenge was connecting 5 separate levels of the home in a graceful way. The clients loved having cozy nooks and crannies, and tucking them up and around the stair made a lot of sense. As a result, we wanted to reduce visual clutter and differentiate the spaces, so we landed on a very simple plaster balustrade with white oak details.
