Rachel is in town this week and we got to visit the Pawtucket Farm Wildlife Sanctuary in Lowell where our outdoor classroom is under construction. The design concept calls for material honesty, a low visual profile, and deference to the magnificent landscape. So far we’ve enjoyed seeing the meticulous board-formed concrete come into shape, we’ve loved witnessing the care for all living things expressed by the wonderful client team, and the overall landscape vision by Agency Landscape + Planning gently shape the terrain.

Corner House sits on (spoiler alert) a corner, within a sweet residential neighborhood, close enough to a little downtown node such that neighbors walk by frequently. We know the importance about being good neighbors, and we wanted to design a home that works as well for its surrounding community as it does for its inhabitants. The home’s modest scale, generous presentation of a beautiful garden, and social stance looking towards both streets all play nicely with its immediate surroundings. Zooming out, the home’s tight energy profile, reliance on solar power, and lack of fossil fuels ensures neighborliness towards our larger community of living things.

The open living space at the Corner House is bright, uncluttered, and well-proportioned. We mapped the family’s movements to be sure clearances between furniture, around doors, within the kitchen, and from room to room could be easily navigated. We also took comfort and perceived safety into consideration. While the multitude of windows is lovely, the clients wanted to be sure they could easily secure their home and minimize uncomfortable feelings of exposure. To that end, nearly all of the windows are fixed. The few operable windows are too small to pass through, carefully placed for cross ventilation, and easy to reach for quick closure in an oncoming storm.

Window seats and their conceptual relatives have become something of a delightful little niche for us. Our first window seat is now 20 years old! (Scroll to the last image to take a look). In the intervening years, our excitement about exploring inside / outside connections has grown. We think it is thrilling to be half-in-half-out, plugged in to the surroundings, in a spot made just for a human body, with a view of whatever is outside.

Window seats and their conceptual relatives have become something of a delightful little niche for us. Our first window seat is now 20 years old! (Scroll to the last image to take a look). In the intervening years, our excitement about exploring inside / outside connections has grown. We think it is thrilling to be half-in-half-out, plugged in to the surroundings, in a spot made just for a human body.

We loved working closely with the Corner House clients to design a handful of super custom moments. A few examples: First, a floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall pocket door that transforms an open eddy of the living space into a private, quiet home office. Second, a window seat and adjacent built-in toy storage in that open eddy of space. When not used as an office, this spot is a great place to curl up inside while feeling the proximity of the garden, it is a cheery place for kids to play, and contains storage for all of the above. Third, beyond this special window seat is a small lap pool. We worked hard to sink the pool into a serviceable “pit” such that the rim of the pool is at bench-height, keeping it low and easy to enter, and keeping it visually out of the way. Its cover locks so we don’t need a fence to keep everyone safe. In all honesty these kind of details kept us up at night for months! They were very hard to get just right. But each detail brings daily joy and minimizes daily friction for the family, so it’s all worth it.

Stretching from the driveway to the skyline views, stairs are a leading character in the Cliffhanger story. Interior material choices were drive by the clients who drew inspiration the Gropius House. Clapboard siding installed vertically emphasized the stair’s height. Below grade, the raw concrete of the foundation (insulated at the exterior) is exposed. We wish the absolute best of luck (not that they’ll need it) to our outstanding summer interns Nathan and Georgiana as they return to Cornell and start grad school at Princeton! Can’t wait to see what they do this year. Good luck, all students (and teachers, parents, and all others promoting education!)
