I couldn’t let peony season pass by, without adding a snap to the grid. Peonies are among my favorite flowers, and I cut and brought in armfuls before yesterday’s storm. My house smells wonderful!

We added a few new flower beds this year and planted 16 new bare root peonies into them. With a little time and patience they will be amazing in the years to come.

My Vermont Photo Project 26.027

It’s been a minute since I’ve focused on this project, so let’s just call it a spring interlude. Between house and studio work, and the massive work we have accomplished in the garden, I haven’t been able to get out and about, photographing Vermont as much as I’d like.

So here we are, at the tail end of peony season, with the official beginning of summer a few day away. And as I plan out my summer adventures, the feeling like it’s fleeting is already creeping in. Silly isn’t it?!? But this Aries borne girl peaks in the spring, and once the red, white, and blue flags fly on July 4th, and the day-lilies bloom it’s game over.

But that’s not to say I don’t enjoy the many seasons Vermont has to offer. And so, I end the spring interlude, and hope to share much more of Vermont with this series in the months to come.

Five months of My Vermont Photo Project!

With so many new folks around here, I figured this would be as good of a current introduction as any. I’m Zarabeth, and I’m enamored by my native state of Vermont.

MTN GRL Studio was born from the Green Mountains. Playing in the mud, splashing in the brook, and skipping along the mountaintops fostered a deep love for the natural world of Vermont. Throughout her youth, Zarabeth had access to a wealth of craft experiences, and developed a creativity that extended across numerous materials. Now a multi-passionate maker, Zarabeth shares her artwork, kitchen creations, and gardening knowledge with others. Through her newsletter she invites her readers behind the scenes, giving subscribers a deeper look at what sparks her inspiration.

My Vermont Photo Project 26.025

The Burlington Community Boathouse was constructed 100 years after the first boathouse was built by the Lake Champlain Yacht Club on the same site. The first two boathouses burned in rapid succession and a third was dismantled 1936 as it was deemed unsafe and too expensive to fix, leaving the rotting wooden piles in its wake.

From the beginning of Burlington’s history, the waterfront has played an important role as a port between Canada and New York City. First as a lumber port, and then later as a location to store oil, storing up to 84 million gallons in tanks that lined the lake’s edge in 1958. The Moran Plant, a coal fired power plant located at the waterfront also fueled the industrialization in the area, spewing soot over the Old North End for many years.

By the 1950’s, City officials and concerned citizens started speaking up, wanting more public access to the waterfront. After decades of making slow progress, the Burlington Community Boathouse was constructed in 1988 as part of the Waterfront Revitalization Project spearheaded by Citizens Waterfront Group and Bernie Sanders, who was Burlington’s mayor at the time.

Beyond the waterfront, many other Burlington public spaces were imagined. The Burlington bike path, which provides pedestrian access to beaches and public parks along its 9 mile path. The area surrounding Perkins Pier was reconfigured to provide public spaces and access to ferries, bringing in added tourist traffic. Church Street Marketplace was envisioned and became the walkable tourist destination it is today.

Check out Burlington’s Waterfront, and soon too, if you want to see the rhododendrons and flowering trees in peak bloom. It was a perfectly beautiful rainy day downtown. 🌺

My field hockey league has moved outside onto the turf for the summer, and lucky for me, I get to peep these views on my way home along Spear Street. Shelburne Point, Lake Champlain, with the Adirondacks beyond.

Who would have thought that I’d make it 100 days, or until Thanksgiving, or a year, or three years, or 1000 days, or even four years, and now 1500 days?

Certainly not me!

For folks new around here, my name is Zarabeth, owner of MTN GRL Studio, and I’ve been on a daily river dip habit for now 1500 consecutive days. The best and oddly the easiest (and oh my gosh the hardest) habit I’ve ever undertaken.

My Vermont Photo Project 26.023

Spring is springing in Vermont, and soon this popular swim spot will be overflowing with fair weather dippers, looking to cool off and swim in its jade green waters. This morning however, I had it all to myself, which is when I prefer to visit. And walking down the path this morning, the smell of the water and earth was nostalgic, just the same as I remember it as a kid and teen.
