The busy pre-Christmas postcard show season is officially under way! We're here in Allentown for the Allentown Paper Show, the place to be for collectors of antique postcards and pretty much any other type of ephemera you can imagine. The city of Rockland, Maine as it appeared well over 100 years ago, during the Old Home Week parade. Did you know that Rockland started out officially as East Thomaston in 1848? It changed its name to Rockland in 1850, and became chartered as a town in 1854. From there, Rockland quickly grew to become an important source of limestone and a key contributor to Maine's all-important shipbuilding tradition.

Another favorite: old postcards featuring children and dogs. There are some wonderful antique real photo postcards with kids of all ages and dogs of all type, but this one really captured my imagination. Love the mom's almost-impish smile, along with the dog's wide panting grin.

"Kids with dogs" is actually a search term we use in The Postcard Dude's Ebay store. If this is a subject you likewise love, visit the Ebay store and do a search using the phrase "Kids with Dogs."

Postcard of the Day: One of my favorite things about listing postcards for The Postcard Dude are the often surprising messages I find on the back of the cards, some from more than a century ago, from all over the world. I particularly love messages from soldiers during WWI and WWII...

This was particularly exciting, because it's a message from a soldier to his sweetheart in Detroit in 1941.
