Okay here is the follow up to my last post. With the two big holes and the bark inclusions at the bottom this bowl will have a lot of character. Everything held together as I hollowed it out and it seems structurally sound. The grain on this thing is amazing 🤩! I can’t wait to get it back on the lathe to do the second turning but that won’t be for several months at least as it needs to dry before doing that. I’ll post this one again when it’s done.

Okay here is the follow up to my last post. The holes and the bark inclusions at the bottom of the bowl will certainly give this thing some character. Everything held together as I hollowed out the inside and it seems structurally sound. The grain on this thing is amazing 🤩! It will need to spend the next several months drying out but I can’t wait to get it back on the lathe to turn it again to get in to its final shape.

I was able to obtain some black walnut recently. This piece looked real nice and solid but once I got it on the lathe a couple of very large holes opened up. Wasn’t sure it would stay together but it did. Stay tuned to see what happens when I turn it around to hollow out the inside!

Every woodworking shop needs a good assistant.

Mine mostly sleeps in the wood shavings and occasionally opens one eye to judge my work.

Wouldn’t trade him for anything. 🪵🐾

Last month, I shared a poll asking you to vote on your favorite of three bowls made of three different wood types. Got a lot of love for the Cherry Plum and Maple bowls, while the Pecan bowl didn’t exactly win the crowd over. 😭🌰

But I’ve been working with this wood long enough to know it’s got more to it than meets the eye.

Pecan is strong, full of character and no two pieces ever turn out the same. You just have to spend a little time with it.

What do you think—did it earn a few more fans this time? 🪵

Started turning this piece of honey locust and noticed a couple cracks forming… figured it was headed straight for the fire pit.

Took a second look though – and I swear it was smiling at me.

So I grabbed a marker, gave it some eyes and a nose, and now I’m thinking this one might still have a future after all. Cracks and all. 🪵
