Lorfords Contemporary makes custom, sustainable furniture in the Cotswolds. Each piece is handmade, bespoke, and built as a bespoke copy of one of England’s most sought-after makers: Howard & Sons.

How do you separate custom upholstery from the rest? Here’s how I know a piece of custom upholstery is good (my opinion):

• The cushion needs fluffing over by the end of the night.
• Two people are cozied up on a sofa, deep in conversation late into a party — and you notice the collection of fabrics and the slope of the arms that make that sofa so fun and fabulous to perch in.
• Two upholstered armchairs sit side-by-side with just the right give for a lively, easy conversation. The tight back cushion is comfortable — but not so comfortable that it dulls alert conversation & the arms are perfect hight to lean your elbow on (see the contemporary Ebury Armchair).
• A window seat is filled with dogs (dogs always recognize the coziest spot).
• A bench at the foot of a canopy bed is the perfect depth for slipping on your ballet flats, with a slight lip on the back so your phone doesn’t slide into the crack — or that same bed becomes a hideaway all day, protected and cozy, with the canopy reaching the ceiling to make the room feel intimate yet expansive, and full of light.
