Another kitchen from this spring’s England trip.

The historic kitchens at many of the National Trust properties ended up becoming some of the most inspiring spaces we visited. Less decorated than the formal rooms upstairs, but often far more atmospheric.

Soot darkened stone, worn plaster walls, heavy copper cookware, enormous hearths, centuries of use layered into every surface. Spaces built almost entirely around function yet are so deeply beautiful.

When we first began designing this home, we kept returning to the feeling of old cabins in the woods; dark wood, stone fireplaces, warm pools of light, windows looking out onto snow covered trees in the winter and green forest canopies in the summer. Not necessarily rustic, but deeply atmospheric and connected to the surrounding landscape.

Throughout the house, materials were chosen to age well and bring warmth and texture into the spaces: large structural wood beams, limewash painted walls, handmade tile, unlacquered brass, pine cladding, natural stone, and deep windows that pull the outdoors in during every season.

We wanted the experience of the house to feel calm and intuitive: prepping food on the kitchen island while looking into the fire, leaving the french doors open in summer, morning light across the kitchen counters, quiet views into the woods from nearly every room.

A project we feel very grateful to have brought to life with and alongside wonderful clients who trusted the process and shared our love for the characterful details.

A first look inside the cabin project we completed this spring.

Handmade tile, deep dark wood, unlaquered brass, and the small rounded wood detail at the edge of the tub…

A project made all the more enjoyable by lovely clients who share the love for characterful homes.

More from this home soon.

This spring’s trip to Europe included as many English National Trust homes as we could fit in. Most of our time, we spent in the kitchens where we found lots of inspiration for an upcoming project.

Here’s a little teaser of both our latest home design and the Homestedt Barn, reopening Memorial Day weekend filled with characterful treasures like this one.

This Charpai bed - over a hundred years old and sourced from Pakistan - is one of the oldest continuously used bed designs in the world. For more than two thousand years, charpais have served as beds, tables, and gathering places.

This one caught our eye not only for its elegant proportions and beautiful patina, but for the extraordinary woven leather top, which is remarkably sturdy. We can picture it as a daybed piled with pillows, or even as a grand coffee table.

Back from a month in England, and as much as we loved the change and filled our cup with lots of design inspiration for the year ahead (more on that soon), there’s nothing quite like coming home.

We designed our home to work with every season. Warm and calming in winter, and in summer, it’s a window (quite literally) onto the nature that’s busting to life around us. We’re excited for it.

Opening hours update… Today is one week until Christmas. A period that for us, brings back many fond memories of browsing characterful shops to find unique things for special people. We’re trying to keep that tradition alive. So if you’re looking to find something unusual and well made, and do it in a way that’s fills you with the warmth of the season, you’ll find our the doors to all our shops open every day from today until Christmas Eve.

And despite the appearance of our shops, we’re also aware that we’re not still living in the Dickensian period. You can find much of what we sell online (gift guides in link in bio) and we’re shipping out from North Branch every day with delivery taking as little as two days.

We’re doing our best to make ticking off the last things on your list a a joy rather than a burden.

We’re making a list, we’re checking it twice, then Wall Street Journal Featured us in theirs which was nice.

Our Quail Hare jug was featured in the WSJ official “very specific Christmas” gift guide - for a shop the prides itself on selling the highly specific we were delighted.

Sadly that jug is now sold out, but for a complete list of our other specific gifts for special people check the link in our bio and saved stories. There’s still time - we’ll be packing and shipping our orders within 24 hours for the next week.
