THE ULTIMATE GOAL
Back to basics... as Carol Cohan Interiors. Now celebrating over thirty years as the sole owner, some things have not changed. In this world of ever evolving technology and buying for one's nest, my role as an interior designer has not drastically been altered. No matter how business practices have been altered, I believe that if one is passionate about their work, it doesn't feel like work. I still feel driven by a need to create environments that actually reflect my CLIENT'S personality. It took years to fine-tune that process, asking all the right questions, learning how an interior must function to work for each individual, determining a client's real needs (even when they can not initially communicate all their needs), appreciating the difference between my client's tastes and preferences and my own.
Many designers feel they need to leave "their stamp" on each project, that the space they've designed should look like THEIR style. I say, with total respect for fellow designers, that they haven't done their job. I can go home to experience "my stamp". Admittedly, my tastes have evolved (and I need to update and purge accordingly), but my style is still basically reflected in every room in our home. It even extends to the "outdoor rooms" I so adore through my beloved garden settings.
It's far more rewarding to leave a job thinking,"That captures who THEY are, what THEIR day to day life is all about, what and who THEY value in this world". While I do believe in steering my clients in a certain direction when they're not actually sure what they want, it is the honor of rendering who THEY are that remains the ultimate goal.
