The most overlooked space in this home wasn’t too small or too awkward. It was simply undefined.

Rather than treating it as leftover space between rooms, we gave it a clear purpose: an intimate dining room that feels connected to the adjoining lounge while maintaining an identity of its own.

A sculptural chandelier draws the eye upward. Warm wood cabinetry and a slatted feature wall introduce architectural rhythm. The round table softens the room’s lines, while tailored seating and layered neutral tones allow the art and surrounding spaces to speak.

The result isn’t just somewhere to dine. It’s a room that makes you want to stay.

One of my favorite details in this cocktail lounge: pocket cabinet doors that disappear completely when open, allowing the bar to feel like a true display moment rather than something hidden away.

The combination of open display, concealed storage and integrated lighting makes the cabinetry feel intentional whether the bar is open or closed.

It’s a small functional detail that completely changes how the space is experienced.

Some rooms are designed to be seen. This one was designed to be used.

For the Mikhail Project, we created a moody custom home lounge designed for entertaining, unwinding, and connecting — with direct access to the pool and a completely different energy from the rest of the home.

Custom black millwork, aged brass details, textured tile, warm leather seating, natural stone and a layered plaster ceiling give the room depth without making it feel heavy.

For me, luxury interior design isn’t about filling a home with expensive things. It’s about creating spaces that feel intentional, personal and deeply connected to the way you actually live.

Repurposing a forgotten pass-through into a custom cocktail bar designed to fit how life is lived now—more hosting, more gathering, more intention.

From the stone and cabinetry to the lighting, hardware, and styling, every detail was considered to transform unused space into something both functional and beautifully integrated into the home.

Because great design isn’t just about what a space was—it’s about what it can become for the way you live today.

Dark cabinetry gets blamed for making a kitchen feel heavy.

Usually, that isn’t the problem.

What makes a dark kitchen work is everything happening around it.

In this space, the cabinetry has visual weight, so we balanced it with lighter countertops, warm walls and natural light rather than introducing more contrast.

Then we repeated the deeper tones throughout the backsplash, lighting, hardware and shelving so the cabinetry didn’t feel isolated.

And finally, we layered texture: wood grain, stone, woven upholstery, metal and collected objects.

That’s the part people often miss.

When a room has enough variation in material, texture and value, you can use a much deeper palette without the space feeling dark.

The lesson: don’t automatically lighten everything.

Balance it.

Save this if you’re considering dark cabinetry for your own home.

The entrance of a home is the preface of the story you are about to tell. Our clients found themselves as empty nesters who wanted to reimagine their home for entertaining.

With their love of modern design in mind, the space was created to feel moody with the use of deep charcoal and blacks contrasted with neutral wood tones, sculptural lighting and the beauty of nature. Blonde white oak flooring and creamy walls keep the balance.
