The Stanley Hills Primary Bath.

Within a home with such a distinct architectural identity, every new intervention required a careful balance between preservation and change. The existing wood clerestory windows were retained, while the original wood shelf niche was restored, details that helped carry the character and warmth of the home into the reconfigured space.

Previously arranged as a jack-and-jill bathroom, the room was redesigned as a dedicated primary bath. By eliminating the secondary door access, we were able to introduce additional vanity space and create a more functional layout without losing the architectural elements that made the room feel connected to the rest of the home.

The goal was never for the bathroom to feel newly inserted. Instead, the new and restored elements were considered together so the finished space would feel intentional and as though it had always belonged.

Progress at our Barry Ave project in Mar Vista.

The kitchen, bathrooms, and staircase details are coming to life, giving a glimpse into a stage of the project we don’t always get to share. As finishes are installed and details come together, decisions made months earlier through drawings and material selections begin to take on a very different presence at full scale.

Construction inevitably brings new questions, unexpected site conditions, and exciting moments where something feels even better in person than it did on paper.

Staying involved throughout construction allows us to navigate those decisions closely with the project team while keeping the client’s vision and overall design intent in view.

Entering the Stanley Hills Residence.

What isn’t immediately visible in these finished photographs is how much of this entry had to be put back together. When we first stepped into the home, many of the original custom built-ins had been dismantled and pulled apart into individual pieces.

Recreating these details became a process of its own, one that took many iterations, conversations, and careful decisions to understand how everything should come back together.

Today, the entry once again offers that first glimpse into the home’s layered architecture, with the original woodwork helping connect one level and space to the next.

Designed as part of a fire rebuild in Pacific Palisades, this detached ADU carries familiar ideas forward with greater resilience and intention.

A palette of Shoji White walls, warm walnut millwork, and expansive aluminum-clad sliding doors creates a calm, light-filled retreat that opens seamlessly to the surrounding landscape. Together, these carefully selected materials balance warmth with durability, reinforcing the home's connection to its hillside setting. As part of a larger composition that includes a new main residence and terraced outdoor spaces, the ADU reflects a thoughtful approach to longevity and performance.

Designing a multi-generational home isn't simply about accommodating more people. Our latest journal explores the design principles behind successful multi-generational homes and how architecture can support different routines, different stages of life, and the moments that bring everyone together.

Researching and writing the piece sparked thoughtful conversations within our studio about how the way we live continues to evolve—and how homes may continue to evolve alongside us. As family structures change and new ways of living emerge, we believe thoughtful design has an important role to play in shaping homes that are both adaptable and enduring.

Designed with longevity in mind, the James Residence kitchen brings together natural materials selected to age gracefully over time. Custom white oak cabinetry, handmade tile, and a durable countertop create a palette that feels warm and understated.

As part of a larger renovation for a growing family in Manhattan Beach, the kitchen was reimagined to better support everyday life, creating an open, inviting space that balances function with a sense of calm.

A closer look at some of the moments that define the Stanley Hills Residence.

From the split-level connections between the entertainment areas to the guest bathroom refresh and backyard deck, every intervention was approached with the goal of preserving the home's original character while improving how it lives today. Maintaining that quintessential California indoor-outdoor connection was a priority throughout, creating spaces that feel open and relaxed.

Natural materials bring warmth and permanence to the primary bathroom at our Palisdes fire-rebuild, where flagstone and walnut create a quiet, grounded palette. Carefully considered detailing and restrained material choices allow each element to speak for itself, resulting in a space that feels both timeless and deeply connected to the home as a whole.

Most of what we share here are finished projects, drawings, and work in progress. But behind every image is a series of conversations, decisions, and design principles that shape the outcome.

We thought it might be interesting to occasionally share some of the ideas that guide our approach to architecture and interiors. Swipe through for a few principles that influence how we think about residential design.

Thank you to everyone who joined for the first Studio Sessions x Venn Studio and helped make it such a memorable morning!

It was great to spend time with friends, collaborators, and new connections while sharing projects, conversations, and perspectives from across the architecture and construction community. The idea behind Studio Sessions was simple: create a space to connect, catch up, and bring together people doing thoughtful work across the design industry.

A huge shout out to Afra, founder of Studio Sessions, for bringing this idea to life and getting the first gathering off the ground.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, stayed for a conversation, and helped make our studio feel so full of energy. Looking forward to doing it again soon!
