In 1923, my great-grandparents immigrated to Los Angeles from Chihuahua, Mexico, with 11 kids and settled in West Adams. For over a century, LA has been good to our family. From working in the lumber business to grocers to my parents serving as LAUSD teachers, we helped build this city.
Today, that legacy lives on through Casa Victoria on Sunset Blvd. We are a small vintage furniture shop operating out of a historic 1920’s bungalow court. We have no alleyway, no driveway, and no private loading zone.
Our business relies entirely on curb access. It’s how we load Warner Brothers studio trucks for the film industry, how interior decorators pick up heavy pieces, and how our residential tenants live.
Now, the city’s Sunset road diet plan to strip away curb access, 72 percent of the parking and reduce Sunset Blvd to just one general traffic lane threatens to choke us out entirely.
From the Echo Park Christmas parades to lowriders slowly cruising down four lanes of Sunset on a Sunday afternoon, Sunset Blvd is the heartbeat of our culture. Stripping the curb doesn’t just hurt traffic—it destroys the survival of historic, independent small businesses.
