When clients think about small-space living, they often focus on what they may have to give up.

I like to focus on what’s possible.

For this Wharf DC condo, every design decision was made with intention—from the furnishings and finishes to the layering of texture, light, and personality. The goal wasn’t simply to maximize square footage. It was to create a home that feels welcoming, functional, and uniquely reflective of the people who live there.

Because great design isn’t measured in square feet. It’s measured in how a space supports your life.

The Art of the Possible.

Wallpaper has a way of transforming a space beyond color alone. It adds depth, texture, and a sense of story.

These wallpaper moments from a condo at The Wharf in Washington, DC showcase how layered materials can elevate everyday spaces—from stairway walls to columns and soffits.

Thoughtful design is often found in the details.

What was once 2½ closets is now a richly layered home office designed for a former journalist and writer whose career — and memories — deserved a space with soul.

Using one utility closet and two small clothing closets, we completely reimagined this overlooked area into a functional retreat filled with warmth, personality, and history. The client wanted the room to feel vintage, but not outdated — collected, storied, and timeless rather than themed.

From the moodier palette to the curated textures and meaningful memorabilia gathered over decades, every detail was intended to reflect a life shaped by words, ideas, and experience.

This transformation is one of my favorite reminders that thoughtful design is not always about creating more space — sometimes it’s about uncovering the potential hiding within the space you already have.

The before photo says it all.

Beautiful homes are rarely just about furniture or finishes. They’re about how a space makes you feel - welcomed, supported, and at ease.

So much of what we understand about comfort, beauty, and care is shaped long before we ever think about design and often by the women who created a sense of home for us.

Today, we’re celebrating the mothers, grandmothers, mentors, and maternal figures who remind us that home is not just what we see, but what we feel.

Happy Mother’s Day from Liz Johnson Design Studio.

The George Nelson Bubble Lamp is a quiet icon of mid-century modern design—timeless, versatile, and instantly recognizable. First created in 1952, it was inspired by silk-covered Swedish lamps and reimagined using a translucent plastic polymer, a material innovation borrowed from the U.S. military.

Both airy and sculptural, the lamps take on playful, organic forms—apples, pears, lotuses, saucers—each one balancing function with beauty. Nelson may be gone, but his design language endures. Swipe to see how the iconic design continues to live on today.

Ah…spring. A season of renewal—and the perfect moment to reimagine how your home feels.

As the light shifts and the days grow longer, even the smallest updates can bring new energy into a space. Think fresh textiles, lighter layers, and thoughtful details that reflect the season.

A simple refresh can transform a room—no renovation required.

Many of my design influences come from the great minds of the mid-century modern movement, and Florence Knoll remains one of the most inspiring.

Trained as an architect, she believed interiors should never be treated as an afterthought. Her work combined architecture, furniture, color, and proportion to create environments that felt modern, thoughtful, and deeply functional.

Florence Knoll was known for saying that she didn’t decorate spaces—she created them.

That perspective has always resonated with me. The most meaningful design work begins by understanding the structure of a space and imagining what it can become.
