📣 TWO QUICK ANNOUNCEMENTS 📣

Somehow we’re more than halfway through 2021! Beginning today with this banana bunch painting through this Sunday 7/18 I’ll be posting one original painting per day that’s available for purchase.

(Click the link 👉🏽 https://www.lenadelsol.com/fruit-art/bananas2021 to purchase this piece.

There’s only one so once it’s gone, it’s gone!)

Many of these pieces are my usual Bomba y Plena inspired pieces I’ve posted progress shots of over the past few months and some are even from last year 😬

Due to being so busy, I’ve only just gotten around to finishing them!

Next month is my birth month. I seriously believe I have the most patient, kind and understanding customers. Art takes time to not only create, but to prep, cure (dry) and be prepared for packaging. The horror stories I hear from other small biz owners about difficult customers is something I have yet to experience with mine, even throughout the craziness and stress of ‘20 — which a huge blessing.

As a show of my appreciation, I’ll be offering my FIRST giveaway (ever!) next month, in August. Please go to my Instagram stories @lenadelsolart now and vote on which product you’d want if you had the choice!

More details to follow about next months giveaway soon! 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷

Starfruit 🇵🇷( CARAMBOLA ) is another one of my favorite fruits with multiple names (depending on which island you’re from) that we easily associate with the Caribbean, but I recently learned it’s origins lie in both Indonesia and parts of Sri Lanka of all places! Either way, it’s delicious, both the painting process and the fruit itself..🌴

Yes, yet another guineo painting, lol. I have such an affinity for Caribbean/tropical fruits that I can’t seem to escape! This time on a hand-carved, 9” x 13” (approx.) oak cheeseboard. This piece is for *display only* and part of my almost 2 year in the making home dècor line.

This one will be finished and listed for sale on my website this Friday morning 2/26 👉🏽 https://www.lenadelsol.com

Nick Quijano’s Whispering From Everyday Life

“As a kid from the Bronx who would travel to San Juan in the ’60s (until his mother surprised him one summer day: “We’re staying in Puerto Rico”), Artist Nick Quijano’s paintings allude to the always flowing, ping-pong experience of immigrant life.”

In a new show at Fort Gansevoort, the artist seeks inspiration in his native Puerto Rico's past and in its present.

Always living in gratitude, this season and every day I’m blessed to experience this life. When you’ve been without, experienced loss and/or long term struggle of any kind (like so many others have this year) gratitude becomes in-dwelling. 💓

I’m especially grateful for all of you. Early 2020 brought a surge of business much earlier in the year than I’m accustomed to due to us all being in lockdown. Multiple delays on supplies/materials resulted in multiple delayed orders.

What you don’t know is your patience, your encouraging messages, emails and notes you send me about the work I do, about what my work means to you and what my pieces have brought into your life, your home, your families.. have literally SAVED me — many times.

The overwhelm is real, the entrepreneurial isolation is real and it’s constant with my small business; as is the joy and jolt of energy to persevere so many of your messages have provided me. ❤️

On that note, I’m finally ready to launch my Holiday Collection on the ONLY day of the year I have a sale; ✨Small Business Saturday! ✨ Instagram followers + those on my mailing list will receive a discount code TOMORROW on my IG STORY to use on my website this entire weekend. Blessings and SO much big love from me to you all. 🥰

Sunday; my self designated “Me” day. I’ve been slowing down. Doing what I can within each 10 hour workday. Shifting my personal needs back onto the same plane as my business needs. The height of the Covid quarantine brought me an explosion of business I wasn’t prepared for so early in the year. Somewhere along the line I prioritized fulfilling orders while I put myself on the back burner. Yes, rent needs to be paid & I have to eat. But it’s still a fast way to lose sight of why I do this work = burnout. Gently easing back into prioritizing adequate sleep, my off-season weightlifting goals, daily runs, spending time on mountain tops, feet in the dirt, lying in the grass. Desert visits.

This work is a lot. I spend a lot of time thinking about what I can offer you as an appreciation. Here’s a snippet of something very affordable I’m launching on November 15. Stay here & stay tuned. 🤟🏾

As I always say this time of year, just because it’s September it doesn’t mean summer is over — as evidenced by what’s coming this weekend. (#111degrees 😣😂). Apparently LA is just going to melt altogether. I wish I was lying in the ocean amongst this colorful abyss @lasalmandasmexico; soon come!

I stepped away from fulfilling orders for an hour this evening to add some gold accessories to this piece, gold is so complimentary to dark skin ❤️ Tomorrow morning I’ll do some color mixing to lay down some color on her skin. Those graphite lines have got to go.

06/07/2020

Over the past 10 days I’ve been in a visual information overload with the many posts of solidarity across SO many sectors. Friends of all colors, acquaintances, organizations, small businesses, big businesses and name brands/corporations like Ben & Jerry’s who recently issued the most transparent and succinct public statement on systemic racism and oppression I’ve ever read from a major brand. ⠀

Who has fallen short? The contemporary art world. History shows the art world has LONG been enchanted by the black woman and all things Afrocentric, and while I see absolutely nothing wrong with the artistic expression of what it is that inspires a person, I do equate radio silence with complicity. Even moreso when the group facing systemic racism and oppression is the same group that SO many white artists and art institutions capitalize from. ⠀

The silence from more than a few tremendously skilled artists who happen to be white and who’ve made careers of painting black and indigenous women as their subject matter is disappointing.⠀

These are a few photos of the transfers I made from my sketches onto 5” x 5” wood pieces for my upcoming series of black women titled “Adornments.” All have varied phenotypes, all from different corners of the country and Puerto Rico, all drew me in for different reasons (more on that another time) and all are unequivocally black. After all, who can tell YOUR story better than you?⠀

If you have a favorite black, brown or indigenous artist or small business owner please drop their name in the comments below so we can all support one another.

For far too long many of us act as if there’s another option we can exhaust that will yield our desired result (an end to police brutality against black people — the countless injustices that have followed, an END to systemic racism, an END to inequality).⠀

History shows that when all else fails (including “Peaceful Protests”) violent uprisings can serve an important purpose. The Birmingham, Watts, Detroit, Ferguson and Oakland Civil unrest movements have done more to bring about legislative and policy change than any peaceful protest ever did. ⠀

We’ve also witnessed the Middle East undergo a radical transformation as a result of civil unrest and the violent overthrow of their government.⠀

Enough is enough.⠀
This is the last straw.⠀
The revolution is here and I’m in full support. ⠀
It is time.⠀

The word “guineo” literally comes from “Guinea”, the country in West Africa and one of the places from which guineo fruit originates. Such a staple component of all Caribbean cuisine and as you can see, it’s probably my favorite fruit to paint right after Quenepas...⠀

What’s your favorite fruit from your country? Comment below because I’m actively looking for new tropical fruit inspirations for paintings!

We all know about color psychology and the effects certain colors have on your mood. Your environment also impacts your mood and in some cases, physiology. Even on my most challenging of days, put me in a vibrant, uplifting interior like this one at @lasalamandasmexico or somewhere near the ocean, the rainforest, amongst the flora & fauna and I get infused immediately... 🥥🍍🥑🌊. #caribeña

04/28/2020

Before this whole pandemic and quarantine happened on a day like today I’d be by the ocean, soaking up the sun, drifting asleep and waking up periodically throughout the afternoon, admittedly loving when my skin turns that glistening, deep golden brown and then having some of the best nights of quality sleep fueled by that potent vitamin D the Sun gifts to us.⠀

I’m a worker. I’ve always had a strong work ethic, even when I was someone else’s employee. I’m almost always working and because of this I HAVE to make it a point to schedule days off to go to the beach, to hike, to read, to write, to lie in bed, to spend the day with God or to do literally nothing at all. ⠀

Today wasn’t one of those days. I’m “off”, slightly overwhelmed and it’s all attributed to not having my needed doses of the outdoors beyond taking basic walks around the neighborhood and not being able to lift heavy since gyms are closed. I planned to complete all of the orders in the photo above — and as you can see, I wasn’t successful there either.⠀

Today was a bust and as I lie here on top of my mountain of fresh laundry I haven’t yet folded, I’m reminding myself that I too deserve to exercise the same patience and understanding with myself that I so easily give to others. ⠀

Plus it’s 6:00pm and still a warm 84 degrees; all is surely well ❤️

Working on some new, tropical pieces for Spring & Summer warmth and for Mother’s Day. They’re the same size as my fruit series so they can easily be mixed & matched to create an entire Caribbean and tropical themed wall space until we can actually travel there again, unless of course you’re blessed to actually live there!⠀

04/20/2020

It’s April 19th and even though it may not feel like it depending on where you’re located, Spring is here. Summer and beach season are around the corner. Earth Day is in a few days. And we’re told to stay indoors. ⠀

My vocation (or my life for that matter!) isn’t ‘traditional’ by any means. As an Artist I’m accustomed to long hours of focus and solitude. And when doing admin or website work all I need is some music, my MacBook to cooperate with me and I’m good to go. ⠀

My point is being quarantined hasn’t caused me any major disruption over here beyond having to exercise more patience with not being able to go to the gym, run errands or be outside in nature & hike — things I LOVE to do. ⠀

I realize most people aren’t like this. Most people have jobs they get up and commute to everyday. Most people need consistent socialization, stimulation and entertainment and there’s nothing wrong with that.⠀

Let’s not forget though, the importance of nature, of stillness and of ART. All of the things we easily miss when life is ‘normal.’ Here are some photos of the work I did for the City of Tustin in Orange County last year — a place that encompasses these things; nature, beauty, stillness (and thanks to myself and a bunch of other artists who were commissioned for this project) ART!

The latest addition to our art collection by artist Lena del Sol Art titled "Patria". This painting of a Bomba dancer caught my eye almost immediately and couldn't wait to have it framed. Bomba is both a traditional dance and musical style of Puerto Rico. Its origins are rooted in the island's history of African slavery but today has evolved into a community expression of Afro-Puerto Rican culture. Thank you Lena for sharing your talent with the world and the rich culture of the Caribbean.
Beautiful art! Wow!
