🧬 Developmental Psychology (Object Permanence)
Coined by Jean Piaget, object permanence is the cognitive understanding that objects and people continue to exist even when they cannot be seen, heard, or touched. Infants typically develop this between 4 to 9 months of age.

🌶️ Alt-rock icons Red Hot Chili Peppers embody all that is sunny and seedy about L.A. The band-frontman Anthony Kiedis, bassist Michael “Flea” Balzary, guitarist Hillel Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons-baked that dichotomy into their sound from the moment they came together in 1983. Fusing Black Flag’s furious punk and Parliament’s h***y funk, RHCP combined berserker bass-slapping energy and absurdist humor, making them college radio’s resident court jesters throughout the ‘80s.

Slovak’s death from a he**in overdose in 1988—and Irons’ subsequent depression-induced exit-forever altered the band’s DNA. But the arrival of muscular drummer Chad Smith and wunderkind guitarist John Frusciante helped 1989’s hard-rocking Mother’s Milk quickly reach Gold-record status, and, as the alternative revolution raged, RHCP emerged as kings of the mosh pit with 1991’s Blood Sugar S*x Magik.
That album revealed the melancholic nuances of Flea’s and Frusciante’s playing, providing Kiedis with an emotional outlet to reckon with his troubled past on the blockbuster ballad “Under the Bridge.”

Blood Sugar S*x Magik’s multi-Platinum success drove Frusciante into a period of seclusion, during which the band soldiered on with Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro. But Frusciante returned for 1999’s massively successful Californication, which twisted the band’s funk-rock template into a sobering, sophisticated collection of cautionary tales, led by “Scar Tissue” and the title track. RHCP retained a chart-topping, festival-headlining reign well into the 21st century, with guitarist Josh Klinghoffer lending his talents to the band after Frusciante again spent time away. But after Frusciante rejoined once more in 2019, his work on a pair of 2022 albums, Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen, underscored that his artful style is the Peppers’ special spice.

Growing up in Berlin with German-Turkish heritage, Arda Saatçi dreamed of becoming a pro footballer. He played for Berliner AK U19 and SV Altlüdersdorf, but his ambitions were derailed when injury forced his retirement at the age of 18.

Pursuing a variety of sports – swimming, running, weight training among them – Arda leaned towards endurance fitness activities, developing a highly-focused attitude along the way. With extreme training and running marathons as his main focus, he has gained a large following on social media as a fitness influencer. Known as a ‘fitness cyborg’, his audience are enthralled by his high-intensity training – which he practises up to 30 hours a week – and motivational messaging. He does 1,000 pull-ups in under two hours, for example. Why? “Why not?” he says. “I want to push the boundaries of what’s possible.”

The mid-2000s had no lack of garage-rockin, skinny-jeaned upstarts vying to join The Strokes and The Libertines on the cover of NME. But not only were Sheffield, England’s Arctic Monkeys able to whip up a media frenzy worthy of their heroes, but they managed to thoroughly transcend it and become a rock institution unto themselves. Only 16 when he founded the band in 2002, singer/guitarist Alex Turner swiftly established himself as a songwriter of uncommon wisdom and wit, helping make the band’s scrappy 2006 salvo, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, the fastest-selling debut album in UK history. If that record suggested Turner was a natural inductee to the Ray Davies/Paul Weller/Damon Albarn school of British pub-rock philosophers, the Monkeys refused to settle for being a homegrown phenomenon and set their sights on global domination.

By 2009’s Humbug, they were seeking riff-thickening advice from producer Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, while their 2013 blockbuster, AM, cracked the US Top 10 (and later Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums list) with the sort of sing-along stompers naturally suited to the festivals they routinely headlined. But once they established themselves as one of the world’s biggest rock bands, the Monkeys proved they could be among its most adventurous too.
On 2018’s glam-jazz concept album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, Turner wove a complex sci-fi narrative to address real-world woes like capitalism and media addiction, keeping his feet on the streets even as his band now orbit the stars. He proved that album wasn’t a total fluke by further refining its slower, crooned balladry on 2022’s The Car, echoing the luxurious drift of Scott Walker and Berlin-era Bowie against drowsy string arrangements and funky wah licks. Whatever the backdrop, Turner’s pen proves no less pointed as he settles confidently into middle age.

José María Velasco, Mexican, 1840–1912. The Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacán (Pirámide del sol en Teotihuacán)(detail), 1878. Oil on canvas. Museo Nacional de Arte, INBAL. EL2025.10.10

The artistic production of José María Velasco is closely linked to the scientific practices of the 19th century. In addition to being a painter, he was a researcher and author who actively participated in the increasingly prominent role of science in 19th-century societies. Trained at the San Carlos Academy under the tutelage of the Italian painter Eugenio Landesio (1809-1874), he shared his teacher’s interest in geology and botany.

Through his paintings and publications, Velasco contributed to shaping a mineral, zoological, botanical and archaeological imaginary, fundamental fields of knowledge to give meaning to geological time, the ancient past and the natural regions of the country.
