I took my youngest to the lumber yard for the first time last Saturday. Forklifts and freight trucks made me a bit nervous going in but watching her borrow my tape measure and ask everyone what kind of wood they were purchasing (and why) made it one of my favorite days at the yard yet.

Turns out “sleep tight” comes from literal rope tension on old-world rope grid beds. I’m talking as far back as 3000 BCE. That’s even a few years before sleep by number or memory foam!

I’m building a modern version right now and yes, I’ll be testing it myself the second it’s done. (Insert joke: I’m making my bed and sleeping in it).

I’ve been going deeeeeeep down the research-rope-grid-rabbit-hole to learn all t**t I can about the suspension that is created. Yes, this is what thoughtful design consists of. Uncovering this tidbit of history was a fun stone to turnover. I’ve probably said ‘sleep tight’ about a gazillion times without thinking about what it means. Now I do and now I will destroy that trivial pursuit question if and when it ever comes up.

DO NOT LET A BUILD CHALLENGE BECOME A MONEY SUCK! Two jobs, two problems, zero dollars spent. On one recent project, a pencil, a screw and some string gave me a perfect arc to create the perfect pill-shaped table top on a recent farm table build. Shortly after that, I found myself at a home in the Hollywood Hills with nothing but some painters tape, a piece of cardboard, and a sharpie, so I could capture the shape of an archway. This was the truest and simplest way to make my template and create the decorative walnut trim that goes around it. I encourage you to try and make the tool you need before you spend a bunch of money on a tool you might only use once. Every piece I build has something hidden in it that nobody’s supposed to find right away, it could be a message, a date, something small that’s just for whoever ends up living with it. This one’s in my daughters’ room, waiting for them to be old enough to find it. It’s the kind of detail nobody asks for, but it’s what turns a piece of furniture into a piece of the story. Last week I delivered a farmhouse table made from reclaimed barn wood — old-growth knotty pine that had been sitting for over a hundred years. Weeks of milling, shaping, sanding, and finishing went into it.
On the drive to deliver it, a voice in my head decided the trim was wrong, the legs would sit uneven, and the client was about to find out how bad I really am at this.
None of it was true. The table was level. The trim was subtle. The client was thrilled.
The problem was never the table. It was the same voice that’s been trying to sabotage me for years — one I’ve learned to turn down, even if it never fully goes quiet.
This one’s for anyone who’s doubted their own best work. And especially for my daughters: your best is sensational, even when the voice in your head says otherwise.
