𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗵 (Pun of the Month) 🐆🎨🏆

At Hattas Studios, we take our murals seriously. Our puns? That’s another story. 😂

Somewhere between Slack messages, job sites, meetings, and lunch breaks, someone will inevitably make a pun. Then someone else adds one. And before you know it, we’ve got a full-on pun pile-on.

For this leopard-on-a-branch door mural, our Project Manager Tony submitted: “𝙄 𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙢𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡. 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙬𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙤𝙣 𝙖 𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙗 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚.”

And our studio gnome had some thoughts, too: “𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙜𝙣𝙤𝙢𝙚-𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚.” 🤦‍♀️

This tradition actually goes way back. Our CEO & Creative Director, Jeanine, and Art Director, Julie, grew up with parents who loved a good pun, and family dinners often turned into full-on pun pile-ons. Apparently, we decided to keep that tradition alive and well.

Because honestly, sometimes you just need a little silliness in the workday. It keeps things light, keeps us connected, and keeps our punning skills sharp.

A big shoutout to HBS Painting Inc. for their impeccable prep work and to our team for bringing our newest mural to life.

Now we need your help. Can you come up with a better pun for this mural? Don’t be afraid to go 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙤𝙣 𝙖 𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙗. 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙛 your best (or worst) one in the comments. 👇 We promise not to 𝙗𝙖𝙩 an eye at the groaners. 🦇

Fall in Love with a Color You Tend to Avoid

Interior designers, you probably have one: a color you tend to leave out. Maybe it never feels quite right in a room, doesn’t play well with your go-to palettes, or simply makes you think, “Nope. Not for me.”

But is it really the color, or just the way you’ve seen it used?

We challenged our team of artists to visit the Getty Museum and find a color they don’t like in a painting they love.

In this episode, Hattas Studios artist Marcus Billingsley studies Hubert Robert’s “A Hermit Praying in the Ruins of a Roman Temple” (about 1760), and finds new respect for a color he’d normally leave off his palette.

Listen in on Marcus’s inner thoughts as he considers why one color alone typically puts him off, but works beautifully when surrounded by the right colors, values, and proportions.

Now, we’re challenging you.

Think of a color you tend to avoid. Then go find it in something you love—a painting, a fabric, an outfit, an interior. Look at what’s surrounding it. What makes that color suddenly work?

Then try bringing it into an upcoming design or art project in a way that feels pleasing to you.

Who knows? That color you’ve been avoiding might open up a whole new world of palettes to experiment with.

❓️So, designers: what color could you happily live without? Tell us why in the comments. Follow-up question … would you give it another try?👇

WHAT YOU MISSED IN ART SCHOOL | Bas Relief

How do you take a blank wall and turn it into a three-dimensional work of art?

In this episode of “What You Missed in Art School,” Hattas Studios artists Ian and Jeanine take you behind the scenes as they sculpt a floral bas relief directly onto the walls of Juliana Clinics A Clinic By Lauren Goodman in Beverly Hills—bringing interior designer Anne Dereaux’s Anne Dereaux vision to life.

Using layers of plaster, wire reinforcement and sculpting tools, we built flowers and leaves that literally emerge from the wall.

For artists, it’s a look at the materials and techniques behind dimensional plasterwork. For interior designers, it’s inspiration for thinking beyond paint and wallpaper, and considering the wall itself as an opportunity for art.

The finished piece is part mural, part sculpture, part architecture, and creates a moment that grabs your attention the minute you walk through the door.

Come behind the scenes and see how we went from blank wall to dimensional art.

What technique should we tackle next on What You Missed in Art School?

A Little Luxury
We can't believe it! We’re so honored to be featured in the 30th issue of BASIC Magazine, alongside nine other incredible spaces from the Pasadena Showcase House of Design.

It was such a thrill to meet Viktorija Pashuta, BASIC’s CEO and Editor-in-Chief, at Showcase. We’re big fans of her work.

Her Letter from the Editor, which she calls "Letter from BASIC Boss" (love it!), particularly resonated with us.

She writes:
“Digital will never fully replace print. It simply cannot replicate the emotional experience of holding something tangible that hundreds of people poured their talent, exhaustion, imagination, and time into.”

We feel much the same way about experiences like Pasadena Showcase.

You can scroll endlessly through your phone looking for design inspiration and see beautiful things on a screen. But there’s something different about putting down the phone and walking into a house where designers and artists have poured their talent, exhaustion, imagination, and time into creating something you can actually experience.

As Pashuta writes about print becoming a luxury, we think immersive experiences that ask you to slow down, look closely, and be fully present are becoming a luxury, too.

And perhaps that’s what connects us most: the belief that creating something from nothing still matters.
Congratulations to Pashuta and the entire BASIC team on 30 beautiful issues. We’re honored to be part of this one.

Order your copy and enjoy the luxury of thumbing through a gorgeous, inspiration-filled magazine — with zero pop-up notifications.

Mural FAQs | National Dog Day Edition

In celebration of National Dog Day, we’re answering one of the most common questions we get about murals: “Can you paint my dog in the mural?”

The answer? Absolutely! Our murals are completely custom, so if your four-legged family member is part of your story, they can be part of your mural, too.

Have a question about custom murals? Drop it in the comments! We’d love to answer your questions in an upcoming post.

Sometimes the best way to improve the work is to put down the brushes.

Every quarter, our team gets together for a Palette Cleanser—a day to connect, learn, challenge ourselves, and grow together.

This time, Samantha Argosino of Harness Coaching led us through a conversation about perspective, teamwork, and communication—skills that matter just as much in the studio as they do out in the field.

Then our Senior Art Director, Julie Kennedy, challenged us to take what we’ve been learning about marketing and turn it into an original idea… that same day. Challenge accepted.

Off we went to Getty, where we looked at art and color in a new way. Then Scavenger Hunts put our teamwork to the test with a scavenger hunt through the museum. Two teams. A ticking clock. Lots of art. Some very enthusiastic (but museum-appropriate) speed walking.

Both teams made it to the finish in the nick of time.
We came back with new ideas, stronger connections, and a reminder that growing as artists also means growing as a team.

Thank you to Samantha Argosino and Harness Coaching, Getty, and Scavenger Hunts for being part of this Palette Cleanser!

Interior designers: thinking about participating in a designer showhouse?

After our first year with our own room at the Pasadena Showcase House of Design, we walked away with a LOT of notes. And many of the biggest lessons had surprisingly little to do with designing the room itself.

A showhouse can be an incredible creative opportunity, but it can also be a powerful marketing, PR, networking and business-development opportunity. But only if you go into it with a plan.

We put together “10 lessons we learned from our first Pasadena Showcase,” including tips on:

• Creating a room people actually remember
• Turning your space into an experience, not just a pretty room
• Making the most of thousands of visitors walking through
• Supporting and building relationships with vendors + fellow designers
• Getting more from PR and media opportunities
• Creating a marketing plan BEFORE the doors open
• And deciding what you actually want Showcase to do for your business

Whether you’re considering Pasadena Showcase House of Design, or another designer showhouse around the country, we hope a few of our lessons save you some trial and error, and help you get even more out of the experience.

Our biggest takeaway? THINK BEYOND THE ROOM.

❓And if you’ve participated in a showhouse before, what would you add to the list? We’d love to hear your advice.

Punth (Pun of the Month) 🦉🎨🏆

Puns are just a part of who we are around here. They are woven into our company culture, our job sites, and probably more Slack conversations than we’d like to admit.

So when a project involves painting owls, bats and snakes, resisting the urge to make a few puns is pretty much impossible.

A big shoutout to HBS Painting Inc. for their impeccable prep work and to our team for bringing our newest mural to life.

Now it’s your turn: Can you top Julie’s winning pun? Drop your best one in the comments. Our gnome is ready to judge.
