Sharing a small item just to show that quality sells in uncertain times. What makes this saucer special? It is made of a ribbed porcelain base, with embossed flowers twining amongst the ribs. The two floral cartouches are hand painted. The gilding is hand applied. On the back, it bears a red printed KPM mark, a blue scepter mark, and an impressed mark. Happy April Fools' Day. I almost got fooled myself by a post from the NYPL claiming that the iconic lion statues Patience and Fortitude were going to be replaced by giant beaver statues. Turned out, that was a joke. It reminded me that I have some fine signed pictures books to list. These are coming soon. Showing the non-glamorous back end of selling pretty items online -- cleaning and prep. There have been a lot of posts lately about cleaning silver, my recommended method is using Wright's Silver Cream, cool water, then wiping down with a soft cloth. (This is not a paid promotion, just a tip.) The tall pot in the back hasn't been cleaned yet for comparison. Happy Holidays to all!

Everyone is probably well aware of the surge in precious metal prices this year. Shipping out 20 orders this morning, 5 are silver related, plus 1 with gold trim and 1 with platinum trim. So about 1/3 of these orders are precious metal adjacent. Some of these items are less obvious, like a South American silver dish and a Japanese silver clip. Be on the lookout!

Here's some more new inventory from the San Diego sale. It's a combination of sterling silver and silver plated Victorian and Art Nouveau vanity top items. How can you tell sterling from plate? Since the Civil War, virtually all American sterling silver (925/1000 parts silver) is marked Sterling. In rare cases, the word is abbreviated on really small items. The color is also a little different, electroplated items tend to tarnish purplish black/gray while sterling tarnishes a warm dark black. Sterling can also be softer and have a more mellow glow. Many buyers are interested in precious metals now, it's a good area to consider.

My favorite kind of estate sale, a hoard of antiques. This one had a funny story. The woman who passed away was in her 90s. Her stuff was sold in an earlier round. This stuff belonged to her mom and an aunt. The woman and her husband trucked two trailer loads of this stuff from Mississippi to San Diego over 20 years ago. They moved the unpacked boxes into most of their 5,000 foot house and lived in the kitchen, one large room, and a bathroom for the next two decades. This must be some sort of cautionary tale.

Many online sellers use Photoroom to remove backgrounds. I've been hearing whispers about their new Virtual Model tool and decided to give it a try. I took this photo on a mannequin in my crowded warehouse then tried the tool. It took about a minute but came up with this result. Wow!

Combining this with the Express Lister should substantially lower the barriers to creating a professional clothing listing.
