The Sonrise returns this morning in all its glory. Not just for our benefit, but also to simply bask in what God has done for us, yet again.

Returning to Luke's Christmas story, the entire community's ceremony, including naming the baby, has been thrown into an uproar because of Elizabeth's ... insubordination? How dare she attempt to give such a bizarre name to the son of a Levite who served his time well in the Temple?

"Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, 'His name is John.' " (Luke 1:62-63)

I've been honored to be invited to the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary here in Louisville several times in the past. I'm always astounded at the stories I hear from incoming students. Once, I met a man and his wife, about to start the several year long education process. He was supervising a group of kids in the parking lot playing some kind of ball game. I asked the young man, "how many of these kids are yours?" Looking around at the group, he said, "most of them."

Who does that? What responsible adult takes his wife and several children, walks away from a well paying job, into the unknown, on at least a several years' journey, planning to teach people one day, all about his invisible friend?

Find your calling. But make sure your helper sees the same vision you do. She (or he) WILL be saving your bacon when you don't even know it.

Tragedy struck our city and our country yesterday, and it will be months at least of reeling before most people know what will happen next.

The explosive plane crash forced shelter in place orders covering much of the city. We're left wondering if the clouds across today's Sonrise are lingering smoke from the tons of fuel burning, while desperately praying for the families losing loved ones. The victories of socialism and left wing extremists in yesterday's elections and the arson fire set inside a local grocery store signal a continued decline in the country's ability to "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD." (Isaiah 1:18-20)

As Christians, how are we to react, and respond, to this barrage of evil and hurt thrust upon us in a slight few hours? (Job 1:13-21)

This is the time to demonstrate what we've been in training for. First responders had sirens blaring all evening. Politicians hurried to say there were aware and would ensure investigations. We, who know the Creator intimately, must do our part, rising to surround and support the hurting masses with the intricacies of a surgeon. (Job 12:7-10) Of course we can't "make it all better." (Psalms 49:7) But we can show them to the Son who can (Romans 8:28). In times like these, we need to remember the Bible is not an encyclopedia of cliches, recipes and solutions we can just flip through, pick one and expect to have helped. The Words of God are a salve to be properly and humbly applied, praying the Great Physician will bring the healing only he has: "The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life." (John 6:63)
