“According to artist Cindy Kelly Overall, “Within every aspect of painting, one must be somewhat dark, somewhat light, somewhat loose, somewhat tight. One must constantly walk the line. With each painting. she takes up her brushes, oils, inspiration and confidence and steps upon a wire high in the artist’s arena. Areas of intensity and calm, light and dark, thickness or thinness of paint are balanced and counterbalanced. Time and again the considerations of composition. drawing, color and subject matter are weighed, adjusted, and reweighed. This discovery follows a circuitous route that becomes both struggle and joy for the artist. The ultimate success of a finished painting is dependent upon how soundly its structure was built. For Cindy the foundation stones are strong. By all accounts, her walls have held.”

A heartfelt thank you to Jess Slade and Ultraviolet for helping us close Garden Party in such a fitting way. Jess brought a wonderful selection of Kentucky native plants into WheelHouse Art, LEX for Saturday’s pop-up sale and spent the day sharing her knowledge about native species, propagation, ecological restoration, and creating healthier habitats at home. We’re also incredibly grateful to everyone who came out for the sale—and to everyone who visited, supported our artists, and spent time with Garden Party throughout the run of the exhibition.

One of the things we value most about art is its ability to open doors beyond what is immediately in front of us. A painting or sculpture can become a starting point for thinking about our spaces, our community, and the way we live within the natural world. Garden Party gave us the opportunity to extend those ideas beyond the artwork itself and into a conversation about the landscapes we share and the plants that belong here. WheelHouse Art is committed to fostering more opportunities like this—using our gallery spaces not only to experience art, but also to bring people together, exchange knowledge, and discover new connections within our community.

After serving four years in the U.S. Air Force, Bill Whorrall spent nine years pursuing his education and earned three degrees from Indiana University: two in education and an M.F.A. in printmaking. Whorrall works across a wide range of media, allowing the concept behind each piece to determine the most appropriate materials.

Whorrall’s interest in art began around age five, when he saw another child’s drawing that used perspective. The illusion of depth on a flat surface captivated him and sparked a lifelong fascination with drawing. He believes that carefully observing and rendering objects strengthens the ability to see and think in three dimensions. For Whorrall, the connection between the hand and eye is essential—both fundamental and sophisticated. He maintains that no technology can equal the expressive immediacy of a simple stick dipped in ink, and that drawing, unlike passing artistic trends, is eternal.

A collection of Whorrall’s work is on view through October 24, 2026.

A garden can be a place we cultivate, a place we invent, or simply a place where we stop long enough to notice what’s happening around us. In Garden Party, Guy Mendes and Liz Price approach those possibilities from very different directions. Mendes’s photographs Howard Finster’s Paradise Garden and W.C. Rice’s Cross Garden in Prattville, AL take us into two intensely personal, handmade environments, where landscape, art, belief, and individual imagination have become inseparable. Mendes has spent much of his career traveling with a camera and paying close attention to distinctive people and places, and these photographs preserve not just what these gardens looked like, but something of the personalities and stories embedded within them.

Liz Price brings that attention closer to home in Blue Stripes and Carnations with Yellow Teacup and Driveway with Garden Chair. Whether working from an arranged still life or painting directly from the landscape, Price begins with careful observation and then lets color, light, composition, and fluid brushwork take over. Her goal is less to document exactly what is in front of her than to discover what can happen through the act of painting. Together, Mendes and Price remind us that gardens are never simply scenery—they are spaces shaped by the people who make them, inhabit them, remember them, and choose to really look at them.

“For some reason, I have always been enamored with the Dutch painters from the Golden Age of the 17th Century to the 19th Century.

The Hague School consisted of landscape painters that equaled The French Barbizon and the American Tonal schools. Their paintings took time to do because they were concerned with the atmospheric effects of simple farm scenes.
