This piece has great Primitive Charm and it doesn't demand a lot of floor space. It has a little rock to it. We haven't done anything to it yet, but let's just cut to the chase- that just raises the asking price. A bargain now at $280!

We had a great time pick-or-treating, excuse me pick-er-treating. If your youth have had their fill of chocolates (as if), we're giving away free Red Devil T-shirts to our Tri-creeker's- while supplies last today. I already finished the chocolates. Sorry 😔

Couldn't you fall in love with this sweetheart? She kinda reminds me of Sofia (Estelle Getty) from The Golden Girls! I hope there's a big heart out there that can handle all the love she wants to offer.

So many senior dogs being dumped, we have taken so many senior dogs in the last couple weeks. Here’s another one she was dumped on the side of the building at one of our Humane societies

Is there anyone at all that would consider fostering this sweet little girl they think she is about 14 or 15 super sweet gets along with other dogs not sure about cats

We pay for all medical expenses food crate Potty pads anything the foster home would need

Senior dogs still have a lot of love to give They’re pretty easy to take care of. They usually sleep a lot. Just need a warm place to land

Our pick-or-treating in Mishawaka was very successful! Heading home now and we'll go through our van in the morning. Stop by this weekend!

𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐈𝐅𝐓𝐌𝐀𝐒 𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐃 #𝟗 — 𝐁𝐄𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐅𝐋𝐈𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐃 𝐀 𝐒𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐂𝐇… 🌾

We started this little collection with a kerosene lamp.

Then came the Geneva Hand Fluter.

And for Thriftmas Find #9, we’re ending with something that looks much older than it probably is.

This matching pair of rural prints appears to be from the mid-century / 1960s decorating era, when reproductions of older pastoral artwork became popular again in American homes.

And they certainly knew how to frame them.

Each print is approximately 12" wide × 17" tall, set inside an ornate oval metal frame and protected beneath domed glass — the kind of glass that gives the image a wonderful depth when viewed from the side.

The scenes themselves reach back to an older way of life:

🌾 A man standing quietly in a field beside his pitchfork.

🌾 A woman pausing near a wheelbarrow during the day’s work.

They weren’t necessarily meant to document farm life firsthand.

They were made to evoke it.

And by the 1960s, scenes like these had found their way back onto living-room walls, dining rooms and hallways — a little bit of old-world country life worked into mid-century homes.

That’s part of what makes vintage decorating so interesting.

Sometimes you’re not just looking at one period of history.

You’re looking at one generation remembering another.

And that seems like the perfect way to finish our “Before You Flipped a Switch” weekend.

Earlier today we had light, before electricity.

Today, we have ironing, before electricity — and apparently, ruffles were serious business.

Meet the Geneva Hand Fluter.

This wonderful little piece of household ingenuity was made for creating those crisp waves, pleats and fluted edges that appeared on collars, cuffs, ruffles and other clothing.

And there was no plug.

No temperature dial.

No “steam” button.

The corrugated iron surfaces were heated, fabric was carefully placed between them, and then the fluter was pressed by hand to form those repeating ridges.

The patent information on this one dates to August 21, 1866.

𝐈𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝.

That’s why I enjoy pieces like this so much.

They aren't simply antiques.

They’re little mechanical reminders of jobs that once filled an ordinary day.

And for the right person, that makes for a pretty unforgettable Thriftmas gift.

There was a time when evening didn’t begin with the flick of a wall switch.

Someone filled the lamp.
Someone trimmed the wick.
Someone struck the match.

And then the room had light.

𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 is a 21-inch Rayo kerosene lamp, complete with its tall, clear glass chimney.

What I love about pieces like this is that they weren’t originally made to be “decor.”

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲.

They sat on tables and dressers and helped families read, sew, visit, finish chores and stretch the day a little longer after the sun went down.

Today, more than a century later, a lamp like this becomes something completely different — a beautiful reminder of just how much everyday life has changed.

And that is part of the fun of Thriftmas.

This is something that might make the right person stop and say:

Our last few Thriftmas finds took us off to the races with motorcycles, Harley-Davidson and a little piece of Illiana Speedway history.

This time, we're slowing things down.

Way down.

Before you flipped a switch, pressed a button or plugged something in, everyday life required a little more time, a little more work — and some very clever tools.

Sometimes you aren't simply looking at an antique.

You're looking at the way somebody lived.

That’s also what makes Thriftmas different.
