We keep talking about meaningful, healthy, student-centered learning.

We talk about student voice, self-direction, well-being, and even rethinking school design.

But the truth is—we’re avoiding the elephant in the room.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦.

We push educators to innovate, differentiate, and inspire, yet we keep them—and their students—confined within four walls designed over a century ago for obedience and control.

How much can we really expect to change when teachers are trapped in boxes with 20–30 children, all waiting for the bell to release them?

We call for transformation but keep everyone inside a box.

It’s like placing birds in a cage and asking them to discover the joy of flying.

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐧’𝐭.

But when given space — when the environment finally supports their instincts — they don’t “escape.”

They explore.

They return.

Because the environment aligns with what they naturally need.

That’s the heart of Prakash Nair’s work for over twenty-five years.

In , his -published book, he exposed how the “cells and bells” model was engineered for efficiency, not for human flourishing. It was built on outdated industrial logic — and most schools still replicate it today, even when they think they’re innovating.

At Education Design International, we’ve seen what happens when schools have the courage to break free from the classroom: they create small learning communities where autonomy, competence, and connection finally come alive.

Students aren’t waiting for the bell — they’re absorbed in what they’re doing.

Teachers aren’t managing behaviour — they’re guiding learning.

The space does half the teaching.

But it still hurts us to see how many schools know this truth and still hold back.

Not because they don’t believe in it.

Not because they don’t want better for children.

But because the systemic shift feels overwhelming.

Because they fear teachers won’t adjust.

Because they aren’t prepared for the professional development required to redesign an entire culture of learning.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐨𝐬.

We’re delighted to share that the Indian edition of our book "A New Language of School" Design will be launched at the ARISE Annual Education Summit 2025.

First published in the U.S. by A4LE-Association for Learning Environments (Association for Learning Environments), the book has shaped global conversations about how schools can be reimagined to nurture connection, curiosity, and well-being.

The Indian edition brings this vision home. Contextualized for India’s unique opportunities and challenges, it continues the dialogue on rethinking how learning environments can truly serve children and communities.

A heartfelt thank you to ARISE for making this possible and for placing this important conversation at the center of India’s education ecosystem.
