A FLAMIN’ FRIDAY FLASHBACK. Consider this your friendly reminder that closed-corner Shou Sugi Ban frames are BACK! My friend debuted his Lucky Skunk Frames at the in Orlando. The centerpieces of the booth were his first-ever Shou Sugi Ban samples and frames … which attendees loved! “FRAMES IN WHITE SATIN 🎶” My friends at will occasionally throw a few thematic samples together and send me a couple of pics. I kinds fell in love with this white assortment for two reasons. Firstly, I appreciate they are purposefully reinventing the Gerlach classics with contemporary finishes. Secondly, I’m diggin’ the bold white / leaf combinations they’re creating. Ziello is definitely one closed-corner frame maker to keep an eye on!

WOODWORKING FUN FOR WEDNESDAY. When I share a post of wood frames, they’re usually simple stained gallery woods or purposefully carved and distressed closed-corner designs. Today though, I decided to travel into funkytown with this awesome contemporary wood trio from in New York. When clients order these funkier hand-carved styles (and others!), Hector and his crew perk up as pieces like these are fun to make and offer a break from their more traditional offerings.

The Official Debut of DEJA VIEW! With our nation’s 250th birthday looming large, I am thrilled to announce the industry launch of Deja View photo frames! These handmade, hand gilded (12k & 23k), custom pieces are the brainchild of my friends at . The Youngers had noticed the dearth of higher end, hand crafted photo frames on the market and took it upon themselves to fill the void. SOMETHING SPECIAL. Flashback Friday. When I talk about “thinking (framing) outside the box” with my framer students, this is one of my favorite examples to share. A client approached my friend Marlowe Hill of with an interesting artwork. He was framing Dr. Seuss’ “The Great Cat Continuum” which features said cat making his way through a tunnel of ‘windows’. As they were chatting, Marlowe had the idea to re-create one of those out of square ‘windows’ as the frame. And he did! To date, this remains one of my favorite Black Rabbet pieces.

SOMETHING SPECIAL. WTF is Leia up to? At the , Leia Scotton exhibited a slew of ‘one-off’ photo frames from . By the end of the show, I think she only had one left. One of her fave clients, Susan of , ordered a bunch but gave Leia free reign on the composition of each. Leia definitely had fun. This one’s definitely the most “Susan Boni-ish” of the set. For this crazy kaleidoscope finish, Leia got super-creative. In a flash of artistic genius, she pulled out her jars of leftover ML flecks, combined a bit of each color into one NEW jar and went to town! Her imagination is both inspiring and … scary. 😄

SOMETHING SPECIAL. When a “one-off” has legs … Back in 2018, a client approached Justin of and challenged him to come up with something truly “over the top.“ After a flurry of sketches, Justin & Co brought this hand carved and spectacular Feather frame to life! Now, when a frame artisan crafts something this magnificent, there’s always a chance that the design will reappear down the road. Such is Feather’s existence. This strong & striking design proved to be so impressive, that Justin’s had more than a few clients ask (beg?) him to recreate it over the past 8 years… which he has!

SOMETHING SPECIAL. I’ve commented (ad nauseum?) that I enjoy teaching classes on (up)selling closed corner frames. One of the key points I drive home is that the only real limitation to bringing a unique, custom design to life is really the framer’s own imagination. You can almost always find a frame maker who will say yes to your crazy idea. Case in point: a client brought in this (totally awesome!) piece of children’s art to for framing. The kraft tube flower and its polka dot background were a wonderful source of inspiration for Jim and the gang. As a result, they created this truly one-of-a-kind vibrant frame that embraces and extends the piece!
