The Woodfisch’s pipes, to date, have used walnut, maple, elm, and rhododendron. All wonderful domestic woods. Had a hankering to experiment with new woods. Local sources had nothing to offer.
The Woodfisch family decided on a road trip – the Woodfisch, Karen, Roscoe, and Mabel. A trusted fellow woodworker had told me about a supplier – Steve Wall Lumber in Mayodan, NC. About 100 miles away.
Arriving there we looked for what we figured would be the entrance to a showroom. Wrong! An unassuming door opens to a cavernous unheated warehouse. Serious woodworkers don’t need no stinking showroom! We are there for the goods. And there is plenty of that!
Rows of too high to reach stacks of all species of wood. Us, being there for pipe material, felt like we would not be welcomed as a valued customer. Totally wrong with that thought. A guy came over, and after I explained what I was looking for, took us on a tour and treated us like we were buying a truckload of walnut. Suggested we take our time and just peruse.
The selections were overwhelming. A multitude of species in all sizes.
I came across a selection of cutoffs. Just what I needed. Small bundles, each labelled and priced. I picked out a few and set them up on a workbench. On the workbench were three pieces of dark wood. Inquiring about them found out they were bocote, from Mexico.
All products are handmade by the Woodfisch in his Lynchburg shop.
