Very old house. Very modern lighting. Exactly the tension we wanted.

One of our favorite things about this project is seeing this super modern fixture from every angle. Against the ornate Victorian fireplace, reflected in the original mirror, hovering above the curved walls, and even sightlined with the dining room chandelier.

We didn’t want the new pieces to pretend to be old. The contrast between the original architecture and something decidedly modern is what makes both feel more interesting.

We love a gallery wall (yesterday’s post). We also love one big art moment (today’s post).

Especially when the piece has meaning. Large-scale art can do something completely different in a room. It creates a focal point, gives the eye somewhere to land and can make an entire wall feel finished with a single piece.

Here, the oversized tree-ring print of a very old New England maple has enough scale to hold its own above that beautiful wood cabinet, while the black and white keeps the moment quiet. Then we kept the styling below low and layered so the art could remain the star.

Sometimes more is more. Sometimes one really good piece is all you need.

The Ember living room was a big transformation, but this small corner deserves its own moment.

When you’re tackling your own home, it can feel like the only way to make an impact is to transform an entire room at once. But good design can happen corner by corner, wall by wall, shelf by shelf. A beautiful chair, the right table, layered lighting, art, a few collected pieces. Small changes add up, and they can completely change how a room feels long before the whole thing is “done.”
