Settler violence has escalated in recent weeks, drawing widespread condemnation and causing Israel’s military to declare Taybeh—a majority Christian Palestinian village in the West Bank—closed to nonresidents in an attempt to prevent attacks.

“Taybeh has experienced fires, incursions, attacks on private property, the intimidation of families, and obstruction of emergency services,” said Bashar Fawadleh, the Latin parish priest of Christ the Redeemer Church in Taybeh. He added that in June, settlers obstructed Palestinian firefighters from responding to a large blaze near the town.

Fawadleh described a situation where “insecurity has become a daily reality.” He said that in recent weeks, settlers have cut fences, bathed in private water cisterns, and stolen a beehive. Palestinian workers have been impeded from reaching their workplaces, and on August 18, he said, two settlers on horseback terrorized a Palestinian family by approaching the wall of their home.

The Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, the top Catholic in the holy city, said Thursday that the West Bank has turned into “a lawless land” as the Israeli settlers’ aggression in the region continues, Vatican News quoted the cleric as saying.

The West Bank has now become “a lawless land,” Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa told reporters at a Catholic festival in Rimini, northern Italy, adding that the situation continues “without any effective security or legal restraints.”
