Preservation means navigating the details behind the scenes. Understanding code requirements, coordinating permits, meeting safety standards, documenting the right information, and making sure a rehabilitation qualifies for the tax credits and incentives that can make these projects possible for our clients.

That was a major part of our work on the Historic Macon Foundation headquarters, where an old fire hall was carefully rehabilitated for a new chapter of use.

The requirements were more than simply making the space feel beautiful. This project called for preserving what mattered, bringing the building safely and thoughtfully into the present, and working within the requirements that help protect the space for the future.

A successful preservation project is equal parts design, stewardship, problem-solving, and a whole lot of details behind the scenes.

We’re still feeling energized after an incredible two days surrounded by 35+ women who understand the work, the challenges, and the opportunities that come with this industry.

Last week, we had the opportunity to connect with women from across Middle Georgia and Athens, build inspiring new relationships, and explore fascinating projects thanks to Athens Area Women in Construction and Women Who Build Together, hosted by Sheridan Construction.

From touring local projects and the Cherokee Brick factory to sharing a table together at Perch at Oliver’s, a project of our own, we loved getting to know so many talented women shaping the built environment across our region.

We left encouraged and excited to keep building these relationships… and hopefully building a few things together along the way!

Thank you to all of the individuals and organizations who helped curate such a meaningful experience.

There’s something reverent about rich color in filtered summer light…

In this law office, layers of blue pull warmth from the sun, playing against aged woods, collected art, and finely crafted details.

The result is a space that feels grounded in its history without being stuck there. It is warm, layered, sophisticated, and quietly evolving with the light throughout the day.

Great design doesn’t just stand the test of time. It gets better with it.

From custom homes and large-scale historic rehabilitations to restaurants, healthcare environments, workplaces, and beyond, our work spans residential and commercial design across a wide range of places and people.

What connects every project is the same attention to detail, careful coordination with our clients and partners, and deep consideration for how a space should feel and function.

For more than a decade, we’ve collaborated with clients, architects, contractors, and skilled trades to bring spaces to life from the earliest ideas through the final punch list.

As part of our work bringing Historic Macon Foundation’s headquarters to life inside Firehouse No. 4, we had the opportunity to collaborate with local artist Wini McQueen on a site-specific installation rooted in the building’s history.

“The Recommission” was created using salvaged fire hoses, transformed with acrylic and suspended in the historic hose room where hoses would have originally hung to dry.

It’s one of our favorite examples of how thoughtful design can preserve the past while creating something beautiful, thought-provoking, and unexpected.

The long concept presentations. Days spent refining schematics. Searching through hundreds of samples to find the perfect tone, texture, and material that works for the vision AND budget.

Visits on site to confirm specifications. Coordinating with contractors, architects, installers, and the trusted partners we’ve built relationships with over the years.

And, of course, installation days… directing furniture placement, hanging curtains and art, unpacking boxes, troubleshooting the unexpected, and making sure every last detail lands where it should.

Our team is constantly moving between job sites, lifting boxes, managing logistics, answering questions, solving problems, and keeping dozens of moving pieces on track.

Great design is about more than just choosing beautiful items. It’s about managing the process that brings them all together, all while protecting the vision, timeline, and budget.

That’s the part Pinterest doesn’t show you!

Thoughtful interior design can reimagine a historic space’s purpose while preserving its history. Historic Macon Foundation is the perfect example of this type of project.

At the front of the building, a flexible gathering space was designed to adapt to meetings, presentations, events, and the day-to-day needs of the Historic Macon team. In the back, the Preservation Design Studio occupies a space that once housed the horses that carried the fire hall’s water wagons.

That history, alongside Historic Macon Foundation’s needs and goals, informed every choice we made.

A building with this much history doesn’t need to be reinvented. It needs to be understood, preserved, and thoughtfully reimagined for what comes next.

Some of life’s best moments begin in the kitchen.

Designed for gathering, lingering conversations, and meals that turn into memories, this North Macon estate kitchen is as beautiful as it is functional.

Every detail was considered to create a space that makes people want to stay.

When Historic Macon Foundation selected Georgia’s oldest surviving masonry fire hall as its future headquarters, preservation became the priority. Every decision was guided by a commitment to retain as much of the building’s original historic fabric as possible while creating a functional space for the organization’s next chapter.

Our interior designers were honored to help shape an updated interior that respects the building’s legacy while supporting the daily work unfolding within its walls.

Thoughtful preservation isn’t about freezing a building in time but about allowing history to continue serving the present.
