Turns out there IS an appropriate outlet for my love of looking at other people’s houses and giving unsolicited opinions about what I’d do if they were mine. 😂

Welcome to Open House Opinions, where I’m touring Macon homes for sale and dreaming up what I’d keep, what I’d change and how I’d make them my own.

For our first one, my friend Delaney Burke | REALTOR let me loose in her listing at 291 Buford Place in the heart of historic Vineville, and there was a LOT to work with. There’s hardwood floors throughout, updated kitchens and bathrooms, high ceilings, exposed brick and plenty of opportunities to add even more personality and functionality to this already move-in ready home.

Not to mention the location is 10/10. Walkable to everything in the Ingleside area and on a stellar corner lot.

The whole point of this series is to look beyond what a house is right now and have a little fun imagining what it could be. Because you know I can’t walk into a room without immediately rearranging it in my head.

Never underestimate the power of hanging curtains. 👏🏻

Hang them right and suddenly your ceilings feel taller, your windows feel wider and the whole room feels soooo much more finished.

Everything I used here is from Amazon, including the curtains, rods and hardware, and I’m thinking I need to put together a full guide to how I hang mine.

Now, am I a professional? Absolutely not.

Do I have some very strong opinions about curtain height, width and fullness? Abbbbbbbbsolutely.

Should I make the guide?!! Tell me in the comments. If you’re not gonna look at it, I’m not gonna do it 😆

I’ve always wanted to do my own WIP Wednesday!! And I finally have enough projects under my belt to show you what I’ve been up to! 🪡

Hand embroidery and needlepoint have been suchhh a gift to me lately. They are a creative outlet with absolutely no purpose other than fun and play which, turns out, is exactly what this overactive, creative little brain needs.

There’s something about the repetition and simplicity but still being able to learn a new stitch if I want to.

Anyway, here’s what’s currently in my project pile. Some closer to finished than others. 😉

One of my favorite ways to make a grocery store orchid look a whole lot more expensive.

I always start with a three-stem orchid. Not only are they a better value but from a design perspective, the rule of thirds is more aesthetically pleasing.

Then I grab a vessel from around the house. An antique vase, a ginger jar or even an old candle container after I’ve burned all the way down. Then I grab some moss and a few sticks from my backyard, save all the wire and clips that came with the orchid, and put everything back together but better.

In no time it looks like something from a florist, and I didn’t have to buy anything besides the orchid itself!

If you don’t have moss in your yard, your local garden center should have plenty. I know you can find it at Johnson’s Garden Center !

I loveee little projects like this because they’re simple, inexpensive and make such a big difference.

It’s also a really good reminder that the prettiest things in our homes can come from repurposing what we already have!

Built-ins are soooo much more than storage. They’re one of the best places in a home to tell your story.

When we bought this house, these shelves were simply… there. I started by color drenching the room in Saybrook Sage by Benjamin Moore , adjusting the shelves to better fit our collections and slowly started filling them with pieces that mean something to us.

Inherited family china. Books collected from flea markets and antique stores. Old family photographs. A piece of a stone wall from the Cotswolds (whoops! 🤭). Souvenirs from our travels. The faux orchid Rob wore on his tux in our wedding. Things we’ve found. Things we’ve been given.

To me, the best built-ins aren’t perfectly styled. They’re layered and they evolve. I guarantee you these shelves will look different in 6 months.

But in the meantime, each shelf is its own little vignette and every piece has a reason for being there. That’s what I think makes a house feel like home!

I was over for dinner at my best friend’s house, a couple glasses of sangria later and suddenly I’m moving lamps around, sending her husband to the basement for tables, rearranging picture frames on the wall. I had permission, for the record. It was actually hiiiiighly encouraged.

When I left, she hadn’t spent a dime (her husband is very thankful!!). She just finally had the right pieces in the right places.

In this economy, sometimes you don’t need new things, you need to shop your own house. Pull something from a room that isn’t working, put it somewhere that does.

If a space feels stale, try rearranging it completely before you buy a single thing. You might be shocked at what you already had.
