My heart is heavy so I want to vent:
Yesterday at the local Festival an individual walked up and inquired on one of my quilts and the cost of the quilt. Upon hearing the cost, he immediately started telling my mom whom he was speaking with, that the quilt in question, was WAYYYY tooooo much for that, I of course am busy with painting a child so I could not jump up and respond. IMO, he was being so disrespectful and rude and degrading the quality and hard work I put into hand making a quilt or anything hand made in my booth. Ignorance at it's work.
If I had a chance to respond I would have politely told him he could go down the road to Walmart or a chain store, purchase a $45.00 quilt in a bag made from China or some other foreign country and purchase one for a price more in his price range that is not one of a kind or handmade, authenticated with paperwork and could be passed down to other generations, besides ending up in a resale shop or the trash, which is exactly where a Walmart or chain store quilt would end eventually end up at as family don't want those used hand me downs.
Cost of quilt in question was $200.00, which is SUPER CHEAP!!!
ADVICE:
People, PLEASE DO NOT walk up to someone's business or items they may have for sale that was handmade and degrade the quality of their work by saying their hard handmade work is not worth the price listed for it. Unless you do that kind of work and realize how much time and money goes into those handmade projects that take months sometimes years to make, you have NO RIGHT to say that their handmade item/s they are selling is not worth the quality for what they have priced it for.
For anyone's information, I actually price my quilts for sale UNDER their value because no one would actually would be able to pay the value of a handmade quilt because it would be VERY EXPENSIVE and Quilts are really a luxury heirloom item.
So if I have generously decided to give someone a quilt for free or charity, or put some of my quilts out for public purchase and you see my quilts are on display for the public to purchase, consider it a privilege to own one of my quilts if you can fit it into your budget or anyone's handmade hard work, if you choose to purchase it. If those items are not in your price range, respectfully walk away. I am definitely not making a respectful profit off of my hardwork handmade quilts, due to me selling it UNDER it's value for the public to purchase, which makes me quite generous and loving.
PLEASEEE, be respectful if you choose to not purchase an item because it is out of your price range, do not degrade, devalue or be rude to the person trying to sell their handmade work, that worked hard on that item, just because it's not in the price range you wanted to hear. FREE, I am guessing was what he wanted to hear, arrghhhhh.
I know times are hard, money is valued on how it is spent in these hard times, but if you cannot pay for someone's hardwork and handmade work, don't inquire, especially with an attitude.
Just to give you all an idea of how much a quilt cost see attached.
