I’m calling this the “eye spy” design trend! Can you see my tiny new acquisitions? I got these Victorian birds from a charming little antique store in Maryland. I think they’re the perfect touch!

It’s been a whirlwind of activity at Trimmings! Just created a beautiful outdoor space fora wonderful client! Three weeks ago there was nothing there but the beautiful structure... today thanks to the responsiveness of my partners at Ratana and my hero, Joey, from Al’s Moving and Storage in White Plains, we were able to fully furnish and accessorize this outdoor oasis just in time for July 4th!

Thought you might like to see a little of my own home... I’m eclectic in my own style. I love to re-cycle and re-use beautiful pieces. Here’s a kitchen Reno I was sort of forced into by a flood on our second level. My husband loved our old kitchen (circa 2004) so there were many conversations about compromise.

#100 of the “100 Design Questions in 100 Days” Challenge.... last one!!!!

100) My fun friend, Leslie, wanted to know about sizes and shapes of dining room tables... how do you know what to choose and what size?

Of course preference has a huge amount to do with it but, beyond that, if you have an obviously rectangular room it would be difficult to place a round table in it. You need 3’, at a minimum, around the table to be comfortable so if you have a 70” table you’ll need at least a 12’x12’ room. A hint: one way to “square off” a rectangular space is to add a server to one end.

#99 of the “100 Design Questions in 100 Days” Challenge.... almost done...

99) my girlfriend, Jamie, asked about master bath sizes... what is a good minimum size to plan for if renovating?

Gone are the days of the huge soaking tub as the definition of a luxurious master bath. Now it’s about finishes, convenience, and the spa experience. So, where it is important to have a tub somewhere in your home from the standpoint of resale, your master bath doesn’t have to include one. A good standard is to include a double vanity, a walk-in shower of at least 4’ square, and a toilet that is ideally set off from the main area. Beyond that, freestanding tubs are very current as are the sub depth tubs like the Kohler Tea for two tub which has a 19” side wall but a 21” Interior depth for soaking. To include these “basics” you really should have a bath of at least 8’x 7’.

Here are some examples of different size baths I e done over the years...

#98 of the “100 Design Questions in 100 Days” Challenge... these last few days I’ll try to answer questions that will help you to get started in pursuit of your own style...

98) I can seem to identify my “style”. I like a lot of things. Other than sifting through a thousand magazine to pull a common thread, is there any way to figure this out?

When I meet a new client do a few things:

I ask what their favorite vacation spot is. I’ll clarify, not their favorite vacation, but vacation spot...

I’ll notice how they’re dressed...

And I’ll ask them about what time period they find most interesting (like rat pack 60’s, the “future”, the roaring twenties)

You can glean a lot from that... an example:

Let’s say your favorite favorite vacation spot is Bermuda, you have on classic J Crew, and you loved the sixties... I would present you with a light, airy color palette with furniture that was a mix of contemporary and mid century modern. West Elm would be a place you might shop...

#97 of the “100 Design Questions in 100 Days Challenge”...

97) What about door k***s? Are there standards for those?

Regular sized door k***s of 2 1/4-3” in diameter, should be used on any door over 28” x 72”. These doors represent entry or passageways and deserve a full side k**b. Smaller doors for closets etc. can use a smaller cabinet k**b if preferred.
