Goodbye, white modern farmhouse with the white oak floors.

Hello, warm wood with a story. Hello color. Hello, curated clutter.

This mantle is the whole thesis of this project. Many people would’ve come in and built something bigger and uniform but I let it stay exactly what it was. Instead, I built the whole room’s story around it.

Cottage-core’s cooler older sister is here, and the cabin-core aesthetic I’m seeing trending isn’t about matching or frills and fuss. It’s a little rugged and all about a home that isn’t curated into oblivion.

The travel find. The piece that doesn’t match. That childhood collection you had stashed in a closet.

There’s a story to that goat picture on the mantle. There’s a smooth stone that was picked up somewhere special. 🥹 That’s a life on display.

So many of you commented on the incredible custom millwork throughout the historic Queen Anne home in our last reel—and it got me thinking about the traditional reasoning behind all that beautiful trim work.

Here’s another gorgeous example of historic millwork, this time in a Dorset home originally owned by the owner of the Dorset Quarry—and that marble on the mantel came straight from the quarry itself.

You can immediately see the visual impact the millwork makes, but historically, it wasn’t just about looks.

Good trim had a job to do:

• Baseboards shield walls from bumps, furniture scuffs, and everyday wear at floor level.

• Chair rails historically kept chair backs from denting plaster walls (hence the name!) and still does the job today.

• Wainscoting adds a durable buffer in high-traffic spots like hallways and dining rooms.

• Plate rails were originally designed to display decorative plates and serving pieces without putting holes in the walls. Today, it’s a beautiful way to layer in art, collections, and character.

• Crown molding creates a finished transition where the wall meets the ceiling while helping disguise small cracks and imperfections.

Moral of the story: trim is absolutely worth the investment—for both beauty AND function!

Those back-to-school displays are popping up everywhere— it’ll be the end of August before we know it!

Seeing them always takes me back to when my own kids were little and I was constantly trying to stay one step ahead of the school-year chaos.🥴 Backpacks, sports equipment, lunchboxes, permission slips, artwork, shoes... it all has to land somewhere.

A well planned mudroom, drop zone, or family storage area makes all the difference. I love designing hardworking spaces that keep everyday life organized! Everything has a home thanks to The Container Store and at the end of a busy day, you can simply close the door and know the chaos is *reasonably* organized behind it.

Sometimes, the best design is the kind that makes Monday morning just a little bit easier!

The past couple of days have been cool, crisp, and sunny... much like this cheerful bedroom! 🙂☀️

This design highlights thoughtful play on pattern and texture. Colors repeat throughout the room, but because each one appears in a different fabric, weave, or finish, it keeps the space feeling layered and interesting.

A couple of pops of color and a few extra details (like that elegant trim on the lampshade) add just the right amount of personality.

Now all that’s missing is a good book, comfy jammies, and a furry companion for a relaxing summertime Friday night in. 📚

Some of my favorite projects begin with a client saying, “I found this... can we do something with it?” 🪵

If you’ve ever driven NY Route 7 into Vermont, you probably know the spot—the roadside woodcarver near Hoosic Falls creating bears with a chainsaw and displaying enormous live-edge wood slabs standing on end.

One of my clients brought home this beautiful slab with a vision of turning it into a desk. I was thrilled to bring that vision to life, transforming the raw piece into a one-of-a-kind workspace that showcases the natural beauty of the rustic wood grain.

It’s a great reminder that some of the most beautiful pieces of a design might be sitting along the side of the road, waiting for someone (🙋🏻‍♀️) to imagine what they could become!

Coffee in a sunbeam might be the best part of the morning. Hard to argue otherwise. 

I kept this sunroom simple with light fabrics, exposed wood beams, and a window seat meant to perch on with plush throw pillows and incredible views of every season outside. The dark window shashes are the only bit of edge I let in, and it’s setting up something. 👀
