Before it was called Fiesta Hermosa, it was called Fiesta de las Artes — and it was a part of my childhood. I grew up attending Fiesta de las Artes with my mom every year, and it was quite different from what it is now.

Back then, this open-air market was a whole bohemian vibe. Painters and makers set up their handmade wares as the salt breeze carried the scent of patchouli and w**d, while macramé wall hangings swayed in the ocean wind and hand-thrown pottery caught the afternoon light as bare feet padded across the sun-warmed pavement.

Inarguably no other person represents the South Bay in the music world more than this cat. He’s consistently represented our culture untethered, uninterrupted, and unedited. While others have moved away, or passed on, he remains.He’s facilitated a lot of good times for South Bay Gen X’ers in what would otherwise be a sleepy beach town existence. I was in a band in the 90’s and my bro Dustin Maenpa had an idea for a song about all the people who followed Fletcher around at the Warped tour which inspired this wheat paste piece based on Shepard Fairey’s first Andre the Giant sticker.
